After building several smaller boats in his living room, Dan Nielsen moved to a tent boatshed to build WOOD DUCK, a garvey-like design of Dan's own. Frames are Alaskan yellow cedar and Honduran mahogany sheathed in jequibita plywood.

I found I was in need of a dinghy that needed little maintenance, so I shopped around and found that everything available was either sprayed fiberglass or press formed plastic. The cheap plastic and over priced fiberglass models just weren’t my cup of tea so I decided to design one myself.

This boat was built to use in the sounds and inland waters of eastern North Carolina. Framing is douglas fir, with marine plywood planking for the hull. Two layers of 10oz fiberglass cloth were added to the hull for strength and durability. Powered by a Yahama 90hp two stroke.
Community School of Davidson in Davidson, North Carolina launches the “Sea Spartan”, a St. Ayles Skiff designed by Iain Oughtred. Built in four months by students and teacher Jim Dumser in the Wood Arts class, the skiff is 22 feet long and rowed by a team of five.
