When I retired from Coast Guard active duty in 2007, I made a promise to myself to build a boat. Purchased a pirogue kit and plans from Uncle Johns in 2008.
FISH TALES was built from scratch and is substantially all mahogany. A 19 gallon gas tank is beneath the bow deck, along with an anchor hatch. The center console is mahogany and the Captain’s seat is a design borrowed from older Boston Whalers. The boat is powered by a 70 hp Yamaha outboard.
George Eckley, and his sons Andrew and Aaron, wanted to kayak fishing, but found the typical 34" cockpit too small to work with their poles and tackle boxes. So they built their own kayaks. First they built ORIGINAL OAK, which is 14'6' long, with a 29' beam, and a 64" cockpit.
Though the design by B. N. Morris called for a 17' canoe, Mitchell Skinner shortened the design to 14' (with 33" beam)and turned it into a solo canoe, QUIET WATERS. He will be using this canoe to fly fish on the lakes of northern Maine.
This boat took me 4 years in spare time to design and build. It has oak frames and spruse planking, the decks are chery and the transom and thorts are mahogany.
Zack Taylor features this duckboat design on the back cover of his book "Successful Waterfowling & Customizing Small Boats." Builder and owner Wayne Graff uses her in Flathead Valley near his home in Kalispell, MT. Her sides are 1 x 10" cedar built over a framework of oak and pine.
ZIP is a 1953 Alcort Sunfish, built in Waterbury, CT, the 13th Sunfish from the first pre production batch of 20 boats. Alex Bryan and Cortlandt Heyniger (ALCORT) built these boats and gave them to friends and family to see if they would like the cockpit and wider beam.
SARAH JEANNE is a 14' Marsh Cat (Joel White design) built by Philippe Voyer and launched in July 2002. He writes that Joel White was really an artist, to design such a strong, beautiful boat.
Built by Richard Cottreau. Heavily constructed. 60-hp Honda, very low hours.
Would make a great lake boat or for your children, low draft.
Beautiful 15' Crab Skiff Sailboat. Built at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. $5,000.
Built 2019-2021, 1,300 hours. Sailed just seven times.
