Boston Family Boat Building Open House

Join us to celebrate our new location and the beginning of a new school year while enjoying a magnificent view of Boston Harbor from the waterfront on Fan Pier. Boston Family Boat Building will welcome visitors for an afternoon of family fun at an Open House from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Open House will allow visitors to tour the program’s new workshop, learn about the experiential learning curriculum, meet students, staff and volunteers, and view boats that students have built.

Boston Family Boat Building, founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring real world experience and academic skills together to build not only a traditional wooden boat, but also excitement around learning among low-income students in Boston Public Schools. BFBB has been working with Boston Public schools for over 5 years to provide students with boat building skills, on-the-water experiences, history research and oral presentations, swim lessons, rowing skills, and travel/camping/sailing experiences. Boat building develops a variety of skills, enhancing and connecting skills learned in the classroom with real world experience. Each school year BFBB introduces 100 fourth and fifth grade students to the accessibility and wonders of Boston Harbor while reinforcing core academic subjects—math, science, social studies, and literacy so that experiential learning becomes an integrated part of the student’s education, bridging urban life and natural life to strengthen learning and community.
