Douglas Brooks Lecture
Ways of Learning: An Apprentice Boatbuilder in Japan
Douglas Brooks, a boatbuilder, writer, and researcher who specializes in the construction of traditional wooden boats, will be giving a public lecture at the Apprenticeshop on February 28th, at 6pm. He will talk about his experiences apprenticing with some of the last Japanese boatbuilders to learn their traditional craft.
Isobune
On May 9, 2016, the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum in Kobe, Japan, launched this 22′9″ Isobune, a type of fishing boat developed in Tohoku, Japan. The boat was built as an exhibition at the museum by Douglas Brooks, who is a boatbuilder from Vergennes, Vermont.
Ashitenma
This 20′ Ashitenma boat was built from the lines of a 1950s net-fishing boat from the Inland Sea region of Japan. Douglas Brooks and his apprentice Takumi Suzuki, with assistance from Koji Matano, built her from cedar and cypress in Takamatsu, Japan.
Honryousen
Boatbuilder Douglas Brooks led eighteen students at the University of Illinois in building a 21-foot Shinano River boat, a traditional design from Niigata, Japan.
SHIMAIHAGI
The Shimaihagi is a traditional fishing boat used for inshore fishing in the Tohoku region of northern Japan. These boats are built without any plans, all of the dimensions are memorized by the builders.
