Wendy Norwitz with her Shearwater Sport Kayak

Wendy Norwitz took just four months to built this stitch-and-glue Shearwater Sport kayak created by Chesapeake Light Craft.  A Maryland resident, she plans to use the canoe around Annapolis and perhaps in the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s new paddlecraft program. Wendy embellished the cedar-strip deck with two compass roses.

Jim McQuaide and Eric Schade spent August of 2008 building canoes at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine. Eric built the Schoodic 14 design, while Jim built a Schoodic 17. Both designs are Eric’s designs and plans and finished canoes are available at Eric’s website. The canoes are stitch-and-glue with 5mm sapale marine plywood and epoxy. The rails and seats were made from ash.

Exactly 2 months from the day I began my kayak building adventure at The WoodenBoat School, I christened and launched my Shearwater Sport on Lake Champlain. What a joy to finally see it in the water! Despite the chilly morning air in northern New York it was a beautiful fall day and my shearwater sport performed admirably, as expected.

Named in honor of the love of my life, Jacqueline Skiff, whose last name is serendipitously apt!
