Tentatively set for this coming Monday, 6 pm. I'll fire up the grill and we can have some rum drinks and fine beer. :) Micheal won't be in town as long as he first thought. He should know soon about his exact plans. Watch this thread for updates. :) I've talked to Clint and Bill, I hope a few more of you mugs can make it.

I wish I could make this one.... but I'll be in Geneva. I was wondering what EBS stands for? I see it on here all the time and have gathered that is means gathering of local members of the church of holey wooden boat or something like that......? but why "EBS"?

It's Elbow Bending Symposium, Timm. Just another word for party. :)

Wish I could make it. Steve White the new president of Mystic Seaport will be here on a swing through Maine.

Anything anyone wants me to bring to his attention or suggest? I'll be suggesting that the Seaport could make a few bucks by cutting/planing amateur builder's patterned parts at the WBS (at their discretion) and having the Ship's Plans staff on hand to take orders on at least one day.

Ships plans dept. could lower the price of plans a bit. I think $25.00 a sheet discourages all but the few who are absolutely sure thats the right boat for them or serious researchers. Even the folks who work in ship's plans aren't happy about it.

holzbt, $25.00 per sheet is only mildly high price. If you go to a commercial print house, an ANSI 'D' size sheet will cost about $10.00 to print (usual commercial monocolour plots cost about $2.00 per sq. ft.). Add the cost of the time of the clerk who get's the original out of file, does the paperwork (purchase order, accounts payable, etc.), packages the drawing, the cost of the packaging and postage and you have taken a sizeable chunk out of that $25.00.

But back to the topic of the EBS - can I come, too?

My local Kinko's gets $.75/ft^2 or $4.50 for an ansi D sheet.
I've got to figure that MSM's costs are well under that.

The $25.00 is for each sheet if you pick it up there.This is generally for "stock" plans, the ones listed in their plans list of seaport boats such as the ones in the collection or several others recommended for amateur construction. Shipping, handling, and research if neccessary to find some designs all are additional. The last time I spoke with some of the Ships Plans staff they were unhappy about the new price. It had greatly reduced the number of plans sold and thereby reduced the total $ brought in which is needed to support the plans dept.

How many people are still employed in the Research/Ships Plans department? How many were lost in the last lay off? I don't know the answer but I worry about the whole collection and it's accessibility. With no Curator of small craft, access to the small craft collection is through the shipyard, inquiry to be made there and one of the shipyard staff will guide the researcher. That was the word last month on collection access.

I don't want to hijack Steven thread.....but...you might suggest that they start with the plans most asked for and scan them to CD. It will preserve the originals, reduce wear, and numerous plans sets can be placed on one cd and called up at will and printed. I have an arrangement with a local blueprint house. I send them an e-mail with the file and they print and mail the blueprint/documents. I get billed and pay within a couple of days or with a debit card. I know there are a lot of files...but it will make it easier and less expensive in the long run and account for better preservation. I have a small 400 meg computer with 4 large drives and there is a complete library in there (with multiple backups now).

Hmmmm . . . I'm in Maine just now and need to fly out from Portland on Tuesday afternoon. I'll see if I can do something about this. Where, exactly, in Portland will you meet? And since I'd probably grab a hotel in the area & stay for my flight, any suggestions for a decent but moderate place to stay? (I may even be able to drag Dan & Sara along with me.)

Hi, all;

I'm coming to Portland tomorrow (Sunday) on The Cat, spending Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday morning with the Portland Fire Dept marine crews and a couple of the A.F. Theriault employees familiarizing the PFD with the operation & maintenance of the new fireboat, and flying back to Nova Scotia on Wednesday afternoon. I will inform my hosts (the PFD) of my social engagement for Monday evening and ask that they plan their activities with me around that. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you whom can join me. I'm flattered that you will take time away from you busy lives and loved ones to come out to meet me. Thank you.

Michael

It was a very nice evening, and it was a real pleasure to finally confirm the existence of some "imaginary friends." Thanks to Steven and Mary for your hospitality, and to all the others for some lovely conversation.
