View Full Version : Staying in Port Townsend
We (Family of 5) are going to be in PT on the weekend of 28th and 29th of August. Can someone recommend a family friendly place to stay?
Thanks for any help

The Tides Inn, is the place to stay. I have stayed there when i was rebuilding a S&S ketch in 2006. They were great. I stayed in the lower room next to the laundry room. They are the Best! Check out there web site at: http://www.tides-inn.com (http://www.tides-inn.com) Aloha from Hawaii, Michael :)
I have stayed here a couple of times:

What about that motel where the sailor hanged himself in the movie, "Officer and a Gentleman"? Is that still there? Might be cheaper. :D

That was The Tides, Ron.
Does anybody have a Victorian B&B to recommend? That seems like another, and equally (or more) charming way to "do" PT. There are scads of them turned up when you google "Hotels in Port Townsend." Some look like relative bargains. Does it "have to be" The Tides?
I never stay in hotels there....except on my boat..... so I'm of no use!

Yeah, I thought that was The Tides too. But when I looked at the picture on the link, it looked a lot newer. But you can see the older part beyond, evidently they added a new section.

Try www.ptgetaways.com (http://www.ptgetaways.com) or www.beachcottagegetaway.com (http://www.beachcottagegetaway.com)
This is a brief list of cozy beach cottage style places, your own cooking etc. Some with wood stoves etc. More rural and not actually downtown but close to town.
Downtown there is the Victorian Palace Hotel, its the real deal:

A very nice B&B is the Quimper Inn run by Ron & Sue Ramage. It is within walking distance of everything.

There you go! That's the advice I think you might want to follow up on...Bob's and Jay's. Not that the Tides isn't perfectly adequate, but I suspect PT can offer you more personality than the Tides without any drawbacks.
Nobody expected Seattle to be the big city. It was always supposed to be PT or Tacoma. PT built all these major Victorian manses when the money moved in, looking for the city to go large. It never happened. The railroad never got there and the city that was to be the big deal in Washington has become a town full of artists, woodworkers and wealthy retirees; and a center for wooden boats of major proportions.
But they had to do something with all those big, beautiful mansions they built, so they turned them into hotels! I'd rent a room in one of those that have been recommended just because you can't easily duplicate the experience elsewhere.

<snips>the city that was to be the big deal in Washington has become a town full of artists, woodworkers and wealthy retirees; and a center for wooden boats of major proportions.
If our pal Cooley (Betty B) is to be believe it is mostly for wealthy retirees these days.
The first time I went there was in 1959...
(my aunt and uncle had just purchased waterfront property on the south side of Ludlow Bay...it's the last low bank toward Tala Point...you could still see the remains of the sawmill across the bay...the property used to have a boathouse...the property was sold to someone for use as a "family compound.")
Port Townsend...nobody called it "PT" in those days that I can recall...the main street had about half the storefronts boarded up. Many of the windows above street level had the glass busted out. But charming. It's gone downhill since.

Understood. I used PT just as shorthand, not because anybody else uses it during verbal intercourse. When speaking, it's "Port Townsend."
I've heard that, too...a retirement town. It would almost have to be, at least in part. It's hard to earn a living there and it's not near anyplace you can easily earn a living unless you have a small shipwright business. But it's hard enough to earn a living doing that as well! Oops! Is that controversial?
The Motto is:
"Port Townsend - We are all here because we are not all there"
Thanks for all the input.
Its not just a motto either...its very true :)

Some of our arriviste colleagues seem to think it is deservedly difficult.
Just between the two of us Lew...it is hard to turn away from the notion that the forum has been invaded by a squadron of yahoos. Not all of the newcomers, mind you, nor even a majority...but there seems to be a lot of people that know little, have no inclination to learn and abuse those who wish to help.

PT is one of those places they should just put a freeze on. All change should be banned :)
Actually they should have done it before they took away the ferrys.

I like leaving there early in the morning when the Straight is dead calm and flat. I've never actually experienced that mind you, but I like the idea!

I thought this was already in effect. I spent a lot of time in Port Townsend in the 1970's. At the time it seemed as tho the town was stuck in the 1890's. Having visited last week, it now seems like the town is stuck in the 1970's. :D
(Just kidding, I actually like the place.)
