Any hints on materials to waterproof canvas for use as a semi permanent awning? I am thinking beeswax thinned with some oil.

thanks

Cotton canvas? The easiest thing is Canvac, though depending on the exact use, it might be very wise to use a flame-retardant treated canvas for safety. Being under a burning oil-soaked awning wouldn't be much fun.

Look at the thread farther down by Bob Smalser... on oilskins etc...

I did and posted there with the same question, but no responses

You don't have to post on that thread, just read it and follow instructions. Since you don't say if the awning will be over flame, we can't really make any more suggestions than we have without more info.

Todd knows his stuff, so if he says Cavac I'd go with that.

No flames under the canvas

Thanks for the tips. It's actually Canvak, not canvac, and I found a local supplier. Looks as though I am in business. :D

The awning I made for Marmalade is just canvass. No treatment. Waterproof's itself by swelling. If it's really dry and a very hard rain starts there will be a little misting inside till it swells, but no problem. Just don't draw designs on the inside.

Any reason not to use something simple like Thompson's Waterseal?

I have about 4 canvas tarps that I want to put something on. Just not sure what.

All of the canvas awnings I have used over the years depended upon their own structure of weave for water tightness.

I was told Thompson Water Seal changed their formula a few years ago and now it is worthless on canvas. Canvak is the only way to go.
