Hello All,

New to the group here but not new to wooden boats. I'm currently building a 16' Brockway Skiff. bottom paint is now on. My problem is I have no idea where to locate the boot stripe with out actually putting her in the water. There are a few photos online, but none I can see a water line.

Here is a link to construction pics I have up on Photobucket:

Thanks for any help/photos you can offer ,

Ya great daft bugger... you don't have to bother with all that. Just fill the swimming pool with paint & ease her in. Repeat 3 or 4 times... and Bob's Your Uncle! :p

So tell me Dan'll... you ol' coot - why is it you're makin' such slow progress with this wee little project. Oh... wait! I see from the fotos that you've been hiring the Cheap Help. You know that LonOn is only good for five minutes at a time before he has to have a cold beverage and ogle the girls... or tell some more lies ;)

To be serious for a moment - First, welcome to the WBF. Second, the plans really don't tell you where or how to establish the waterline? If you don't get the answer here, I know there's been at least one article in WB on the topic. If you have the index, you can ferret it out quickly. If you don't have that issue, holler, and I'll see if I can unearth it. I've driven past your exit a couple times recently and almost called to see if I could come look at the progress.

Cheers & Beers,

Next time you are down my direction, let me know. I'm home until about 1:30 weekday afternoons.

I've built dozens of these boats and can tell you this.
APPROXIMATELY - the water line will be up about 4 inches from the bottom of the transom (depends a lot on how big an engine you're using, and the bow will be clear of the water. The waterline will begin in the bow area approx. 8 inches behind the stem.
Really - it's a small boat, so I would put her in the water, find the scum line and go from there.

There you go Dan'l. This is what you were inclined to do anyway. Of course, there's very little scum in that stretch of the Willamette this time of year, eh?

Of course much depends on what sort of strange propulsion unit will be installed. If batteries will be involved, paint it a bit higher -

Ya know Thorne,

I may have to run electric at the upcoming Timothy lake messabout. I now have an electric start Honda 15hp longshaft. I intend to use her with remote control, but having trouble finding a remote setup that will work with my 1998 model outboard, ones I find are for newer models. I do have everything on hand for full remote electric operation.

I think this Friday Sept. 4th I'll load her up with a bunch of 6 volt batteries and take her to my nearby ramp to locate the Boot Stripe.

Hey Saltiguy,

I take it you like the Brockway. I've looked at the plans, maybe it was you that put out the recommendation on another thread. What are their strong points & weaknesses? Looks like a nice little boat to me.

Cheers,

Bobby

Well, I never made it to the river and I needed to get her painted for an upcoming boat club Messabout. Going by Saltiguys' tip I painted the dividing line at 7" at transom and 2" at stem. I'll be adding a 5x5' wheel house, hoping I have it close to the waterline.

I also added 10" to the sides from bow to 8' amidships, and 6" to the transom. With the height of the wheel house 6', I thought I needed a deeper hull.

We'll see how it looks this weekend at Timothy Lake, right?

David2,
Yes, her maiden voyage is at Timothy Lake, hope she floats  Spent yesterday fitting a temporary plywood floor, not enough time to do the Teak floor I want.

Today I'm going to see if I can make a tent camper out of her. Have an old 7x7' free standing tent and want to see how it would work to cut the floor out and mount the fiberglass poles to four temporary pole pockets fastened to the ribs. Hoping this would almost give me standing head room. The plywood sub-floor should keep me dry, about 3" space below.

Dan'l,

Looking forward to seeing her in-the-flesh tomorrow. She looks quite ready to take on the stumps and boulders of Timothy Lake. And she should be a prodigious Crawdad Slayer :D:D

Well, the Brockway was a hit at our clubs annual Timothy Lake (Oregon) Messabout http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102722

Everyone loved her, on the way home wife and I stopped at a restaurant and when we came out there were about six people looking her over.

Above pic shows her with three of us plus dog (way back in after rescuing Jerry and his dog from capsized sailboat), looks like I need to add a couple inches to my boot stripe/water line since I have yet to build the 5x5' standing wheelhouse.

Had a good [bad] water leak from some seam, plan to turn her back over and glass her this winter.

Dan'l,

She definitely was a hit. I like what you've done with the raised sheer. I look forward to seeing how the pilothouse turns out.

Dan -

She does look great! But 16'? Man, I would have sworn she is longer than that. I'm looking forward to seeing the pilothouse.

Who's that handsome chap in the bow? Why, that's me -- and very nautical I look, too.

Obviously your bootstripe isn't up to the weight of three real men, not to mention the dog, so be sure to raise it after you glass the bottom which will add weight anyway.
