I was over in Bangor today and wandered down to Port Penrhyn to see if I could scrounge/trade some bronze bits for Sibrwd.

There were a few new boats in including this twin master which looked more like a film set [or a film-makers idea of a sailing ship]

Also there was a much nicer gaff schooner:

and this gaff cutter 'Tamsin' [I think] built for the then governor of tasmania in 1898. She was having a plank replaced and some work to the rudder heel.

the stern coaming on this converted lifeboat caught my eye too:

The "Pickle" is a replica of the Naval schooner that carried the news of the victory (and Nelson's death)at Trafalgar, to England after the battle. She arrived in Falmouth, and the Commander, a naval lieutenant then travelled by coach to London with the news.
I believe it was built in Russia.

You didn't catch the name of the ex-lifeboat, by any chance?

Love the little topsail schooner. What? about 50 ft?

No, but I'll take a look next time I'm there. She was schooner rigged if that's any help.

Was back in the area yesterday and checked out the 'lifeboat'. Not sure whether she actually is an ex-lifeboat now. No name to record

My home town.
I put together some notes for an article about he boatyard there and promptly lost them in an air travel debacle.

There are always some great projects. The schooner is owned by the owner of the boatyard, Pickle was indeed built for a film and her construction reflects the fleeting nature of that medium.

Did you have "Beach Road" fish and chips? Second only to Gibraltar fish and chips.

No essay on Port Penrhyn would be complete without a picture of the toilet, I can't remember if it's a 6 or 8 holer

I pretty much always have 'beach road' fish and chips when I'm in Bangor [except this last time- I was on a starvation regime before going to have a pipe stuck down my gullet :o] probably the best chippie in the area.

best F&C I ever had was in Whitby.

Is the boatyard at Port Penrhyn still going? They used to have a website, linked to the Port Penrhyn main site. I can no longer find it.

It will be a pity if Dickies takes over that dock

They are trying, but the mussel fishermen have their boats in there and it's still a commercial dock.

A planning app recently crossed my desk for a hundred odd houses to be built on half of Dickies site [by Watkin Jones <<shudder>>] so the idea of converting at least part of the tidal flats in Hirael bay in front of the beach road is still alive, especially, after the proposed marina at gallows point, Beaumaris was recently thrown out by the WAG.

There is still a trad boat repairer / builder there at PP, but he's a fairly young chap and I'm pretty sure he himself has only been there a few years.

This is the Letty - an original Bristol Channel pilot cutter built by the Rowles yard in 1905. There was an article about the shipwright and boatyard at Port Penrhyn in WB magazine a long time ago. I'll try to find the issue #. There were photos of the Letty's spars hanging in the shop. I have very few photos of her. If you are ever in the area again could you snap a few more shots of her for me?

Sure. Anything in particular? I usually have my lunch down there every couple of weeks.

Hi,
I'd be interested in the name of the nobby if she is still there the next time you drop by. I think her name board is on the cockpit coaming.

I'm O.K. with the mussel fishermen and the commercial guys. I'd rather not see it taken over by Merseysiders with Beneteaus.

I hate what they did to the old docks at Felinheli.

I can't remember that and would love to see it. I wrote a short piece about www.classicsailboats.co.uk about 4 years ago, are you mistaking it for that. A search on "Penrhyn" brigs up nothing in the index.

This thread brings back a lot of memories. Bangor was a regular haunt of mine when I lived over at Cemaes Bay, and the fish and chips..the thought makes me drool, not a pretty sight I can tell you.
Here's a picture of a nobby, the Fisher Lass, which is based at Douglas IOM, but was refitted last year at Port Penrhyn.

Nothing in particular - maybe just some close-up's/detail shots of some of her gear and perhaps a shot of her from the other side of the basin?
Thanks!:)

It was definitely in WB. It was an article about the yard and the shipwright there. Unfortunately my WB collection is at a friend's house - so I don't have easy access to it. I'll have a look next time I'm there.
Anyone know the name of the yard or shipwright that used to operate in PP in the 1980's? That would help in the search.

Thanks for all the pics, I was last there in 74. And stayed at Cemaes Bay.
Gareth, the last F and Cs I ate in Gibraltar were the pits, some pub on the right down Main St.

She's interesting, everything right about her for a Manx nobby, but at about 3/4 size.

But not a Morcambe Bay nobby methinks? or is 'my' nobby a shrimper?

About the only place left on the West Coast where there is such a collection of wooden yachts. Poor in comparison with some of the East Coast creeks and holes.

Perhaps not originally a nobby as such. Here's a bit more history:

Built 1926 by Arthur Miller, Port St Mary as a passenger boat, and long-liner in the winter. Over the years was registered DO54, RY51 and PL9.

This is a Lancashire nobby

They were both shrimpers and prawners (Pandalus montagui) not Dublin Bay prawns.

This is a Manx nobby
