View Full Version : Removing sanding discs from the wheel

I am using adhesive backed sanding discs to final shape the molds I am making.
This requires changing the disc every day or so. Each time I remove a disc some of the adhesive remains. Now it is to the point I can't hardly get the disc off because it sticks to the residue.
Any ideas on how to get the glue residue off the metal disc?
Thanks, its holding up production!

Alan,
I have had good luck with a heat gun and putty knife.
I would think a hair dryer would also work.
After scraping the big hunks off, being careful not to damage the smooth contact surface, I wipe with a rag with denatured alcohol.
Hope this helps and you are back enjoying(?) yourself sanding.

It helps to remove them when they're warm/hot. I just run a pc. of scrap across the disc, slowly, to build up heat. Then asap, pull the old one off. Just another variation of the other post.

Use 3M adhesive remover?

I've had luck using naptha or plain paint thinner.

It will need something like toluene, which is about what the 3M solvent seems to be.

Thanks for the advice. I got most of it off using a heat gun and a razor type scraper. Enough that I could put a new disc on and get back to work.
Next time I am out I will try to get some 3M adhesive remover to try to get the rest off.
Ah yes, nothing is more fun than sanding.
