I imagine the loss of the mast would change its looks a tad...

They built that boat just 20 blocks from my house, you know?

Those jerks still haven't invited me out for an afternoon sail, though.

Is that right - the mast cost $10 million? Rick

Apparently the failing mast did not scar the hull much but they were 7 miles out to sea.

the Hydroptère's 51,36 knots on 500 mètres will be hard to beat !

You were right, Bigfella, the loss of it's mast does change it's appearance a tad. And maneuverability.

Do you think maybe they have taken optimization a trifle too far?

Hey, they race the Formula 40s like that. Less wetted surface with just the one ama in the water.

Even when you're a gazillionair, it must suck to loose a rig :(

Gerard has a point, everyone is claiming these boats to be fast, but Hydroptère is faster.

I remember someone claiming to have a very fast boat in Antigua, there was a race (was it Wednesday) anyway one evening, he was overtaken by a girl on a windsurfer, she was wearing her characteristic sparkly make up and bikini bottom.

That's what I call aplomb.

A friend of mine has some knowledge of BMWO's program, and he told me that they had already written off that mast anyway. Not that they wanted to break it when or how they did, but they pretty much knew that it WOULD break at some point in their practice sessions.

What really interests me is the stress being handled by those cross sections. Can you imagine?

As far as Joe's favorites go, I have forgotten, are we still doing canting keels or have those gone by the wayside yet?

I remember reading an account of the ENZA rtw record - when Cam Lewis flew a hull for long enough to repair it after a bump.....

He's off to try again!!

And now - The wing mast!

Interesting ... but the deed of gift limits challengers to "a yacht or vessel propelled by sails only" ... Think Alinghi will agree that a wing mast is a "sail" ?

Interesting ... but the deed of gift limits challengers to "a yacht or vessel propelled by sails only" ... unless Alinghi is willing to agree that a wing mast is a "sail" it's not going to happen.

Am I the only person in the world that doesn't think its going to happen anyway ,no matter what?

Possibly. I used to think that, or that it would br like th Fay debacle.

I'm excited about this wing though

I'm officially gobsmacked Okay then... as much as I'm against the whole debacle that the AC has become, that thing is pretty badassed. I'd drive it!

The Bigfella
11-10-2009, 07:56 PM
Its about time the AC caught up with the Little America's Cup. Miss Nylex, the Aussie boat was using a double-slotted wing in 1974... yep, 35 years ago. It could develop as much pressure as a soft sail nearly three times its area

If you want to see some real progress... simplify the rules:

1) a race series between two sailboats
2) course location / specification
3) best of 7.
