Hello. New to the forum. I have been sailing and racing dinghies, Thistles, catamarans, etc... for years. I like boats that sail well. I am getting to the point where I would like a boat that is easy to set up that I can go out on with my wife or my dog and just sail w/o putting on a wetsuit (though I will always have my cat). I also would like to build said boat (I've been building RC models for years). The Bolger Bobcat, described in Payson's "Build the Instant Catboat" seems to be along the lines of what I am looking for: relatively simple construction for a first project, small dimensions but with a decent amount of room for 2 people or 1 and a Black Lab named Neptune. She is wider, shorter, and heavier than a Laser but has approx 30 more sq feet of sail. Has anyone sailed a Bobcat? How does she perform in light air/heavy air? Does she drive to windward decently (obviously will not do it as well as a Laser or Thistle with the gaff cat rig). I am not looking for a screamer but do not want a slug either. If anyone has any experience to share I will appreciate it very much. Thanks.

A Bobcat should meet your needs. My Bobcat has sailed with me and four teenagers aboard without feeling crowded. My Australia shepherd sails with me as well. The boat is lively and sails well on all points. I used to sail a Highlander, which is a big Thistle. The Bobcat is not in her league, but it's a much more relaxed way to sail.
The Bobcat feels a lot bigger than 12 1/2 feet.
After more than two years of sailing a Bobcat I am still enjoying her and learning a thing or two.

I built a Bobcat exactly 50 boats ago. I think it was one of the better ones, all things considered. If one of my nephews or nieces wanted a simple boat they could build with minimal tools or experience, that's one of the ones I would point out for consideration.

There was a partially finished one on e-bay just last week in Pennsylvania.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the responses. I think I will build myself a bobcat! I order Payson's book on it three days ago just to do more thinking on it but I think I have already decided. I am PCSing back to the states in May (in Afghanistan now but stationed in Okinawa) to Georgia and will do more reading on the Bobcat and boatbuilding in the mean time. Thanks again and please add to the info at will if you guys think of anything else. Thanks again.
