Were the original plans for the Spray
ever published. J.Slocum said that some naval types had come by and measured his boat. Were these measurements published in any journal or book, and does anyone have the
publication or copies ?

Your best bet is to read "In the Wake of the Spray" by Kenneth Slack. (I found one in the local library) Mr. Slack has done a lifetime of research on the Spray and a lot of work re-creating the plans, which are shown in great detail in the book.

...at two or three points during Spray's existence dimensions were taken but no true offsets were ever made or no true lines plans were ever drawn. Several years ago we donated what is probably the most comprehensive documentation consisting of letters, photos and original documents ever assembled to the Peabody museum with the express purpose of setting up a Slocum exhibit. I do not have drawings from Pete Culler....I have looked at Bruce Roberts "Spray" versions and a lot of poetic license has been used.

What of the note made by Walter Teller, "The Voyages of Joshua Slocum", Sheridan House. p. 375 that the spray "was taken from New York to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and, under the supervision of teh Park City Yacht Club, was hauled out of the water and very carefully measured in every wat to secure a satisfactory result. captian Robins produced the model."
Might not this group have a copy of his drawings/notes.

The referenced drawings were not that accurate. The measurements were made to the outside of the wetted planks using a plumb bob and wooden measuring stick. On at least three ocassions similar measurements were made and all vary about 5-7%, that is why I say they are "approximate". In each case the boat was hauled and blocked...but not levelled and the measurements from the waterline were questionable. There is no reference to internal construction or scantlings or the weight of ballast, which was mostly rock and cement. An approximate hull can be made but not one from which stability etc can be accurately determined. We do not know the weight of the non ballasted boat or the amount of ballast or how it was distributed

WB #21 has a pretty extensive article on the building and sailing of "Scud," the Maynards' Spray Replica. The article includes a sidebar by Weston Farmer in which he tells how he basically re-drew the plans for the Spray. He includes a table of offsets.
