A most interesting little Polish sailboat - plans seem to be free.

Sztrandek (http://www.zeglarstwo.3miasto.pl/sztraeng/sztrengl.html#zagle) (Flushdeck?)
LOA: 16'3"
LWL: 14'7"
Beam: 7'2"
Draft: 10" / 3'4"
Displacement: 1804#
Weight: 550#

Reminds me mildly of a San Juan something or other.

Now wait one minute! It displaces 1804# (lbs?) and weighs 550# ???? Didn't Archimedes or somebody say something about that back in BC?

I suspect that the problem is somewhere in the translation. Looking at the drawings I see that there are several compartments filled with foam. Maybe the designer means that, flooded, the boat will support 820 kg.

Boat optionally takes internal water ballast. Maybe "weight" is the boat sans water. Otherwise, if you speak polish, ask gene@post.pl. Heck, he might even know english :D

Could that mean - displacement at waterline?

The weight is probably empty on the trailer. Displacement would be in the water, with water ballast, people and their kit aboard, ready to go sailing. Things like an outboard, it's fuel, anchor, cooking gear, cooler, food, sleeping bags, etc., all add up. Seems reasonable.

Grrrr... the website seems to be gone and, for some reason, IE saved all the jpgs I downloaded too small and they're not usable! Did anyone save them in a larger size? (Dingo?)

Europeans must have all the luck! The boat is spec'd. for 8mm plywood. Good luck finding 8mm in North America. The only 8mm marine plywood I found last December was Bruynzeel from M.L. Condon. You don't want to know what it cost. So, this little beauty would end up made of 9mm plywood on our side of the pond. No worries-just be a bit heavier and a bit stronger.

I suspect our 9mm is cheaper than their 8mm, aside from which, 8mm is a whisker over 1/4" and that seems like awfully thin - 3/8" or 9mm doesn't sound like a whole lot more.

Harbor sales has 8mm okoume for 80.00 a sheet.

No doubt about the price difference between their 8mm vs. our 9mm. Actually, I got a quote from the vendor in Germany for the larch plywood that Iain Oughtred uses. The price per square meter was more than the U.S. price for whole 4x8 sheets of sapelli or khaya.

I wasn't shopping for okoume so I didn't know about the 8mm from Harbor Sales. Sorry.

That (820 kg) is the loaded displacement, while the hull weighs 250+150 = 400 kg. Means that the waterline is computed for a load (people, gear, etc.) of 420 kg.
