I am gearing up to build a skiff and am considering Redmond's Flapjack. I have been to the site but would like to see other pictures. If anyone has any anecdotal evidence of building one, that would also be interesting.

I am seeking a skiff that can be (relatively) easily built and can handle a large man and boy goofing around while pretending to fish. Alone, I would like to take the boat camping in too much weather on Lake Champlain. And I have to be able to get it out of my basement.

Your opinions are appreciated.

If you haven't already, pick up Tom Hill's Ultralight Boatbuilding. Flapjack is a featured project.

David:

Consider Arch Davis' Sanddollar. It is eleven feet long and was a fun build for me. You will get more info from Arch than you would believe.

Tom Hill's book is definitely worth owning, but anyone who's thinking about building FLAPJACK should be aware that Hilll didn't build the boat entirely according to plans. Here's what Steve Redmond says about it on his site:

There are some differences between the building description in Ultralight Boatbuilding and the actual designed construction, and it is recommended that builders follow the plans where they differ from the book, since they will make it easier to build and more economical of materials.

Hello, I'm getting ready to start on a flapjack skiff later this month, I found a guy on the internet that had a set of plans and a new set of sails. I think this boat has great lines, He also grabbed some pictures of a flapjack at a boat show. I'm not sure how to put them on this site but I'll try. Randy if you send me you email address I'll send them to you

I just bought a frame kit/plans for a "Sand Dollar" skiff on eBay, planning on a Spring project for dad and the kids. The Flapjack was a close second, as was the Tetra- I love Redmond's eye/designs. smile.gif But for my purposes, 11' was the deciding factor, as this will also serve as one of a pair of tenders for our Egg Harbor, and is the largest that will fit on the allotted space. Have fun! smile.gif

David, have you gathered any more information since you started this thread? I think Flapjack will be my next boat. I wrote Randy B for those pictures he mentioned. That should help me firm up my decision.

I would also be interested in any anecdotal information, or pictures.

By the way, on the plans, Steve Redmond makes it clear how the Hill book differs from what he recommends. The pictures in the Hill book are pretty useful.

I'm curious: If you draw out the stem from the lines on the plans, which are drawn over a grid that represents 3" squares, it seems like you could be as much as a 1/4" off. I suppose you have to use your eye. Any tips anyone has?

Randy's pictures were very convincing. I'll build the boat. That's what I decided before I took the crucial step of measuring the cellar bulkhead. Now I need to find a workshop in which to build the boat. Then for sure I will build the boat.

Down here we thaw out around March or April. I'm building mine outside! I'll have to build some sort of sun/rain shelter.
