In this months issue of wooden boat i was reading the raid article. The swedish pilot boat caught my eye and i was wondering if anyone has any information on where i could find plans for this boat or just information on the boat in general

thanks

Did you see the video from the Sweden Raid that's posted on Rudderposts? It's awesome! :D
Go back to the WoodenBoat homepage - the button below the Forum button is Rudderpost, the Blog. Go there and look for the link to the video. Well worth the effort. smile.gif

Jared I love those swedish pilot boats! They have gotten some good coverage in the last few years in Watercraft magazine and I've lusted over the pictures of them. I do not know if/where plans might be available, but if you turn up a resource I would be very grateful if you'd post it here. I will of course do the same.

Excellent video, Steven, thanks!

It is a great video - what is a shame though is that the blog seems to have gone to sleep since November the 17th. I thought it was a good idea! If you're listening Woodenboat folks, please can it come back to life?

Thanks,

Gavin

Check out this link. In Swedish, pilot is lots or lotsa, per an online dictionary, hence Lotsbat. Not sure what Skum is, a location?

Rereading the "Raid" article in WB #187, it appears that the boat OLIVIA was built from plans from "1914 Swedish Kalmarsund pilot boat SKUM". I'll bet this is the same boat on the Batritningar website.

I think the way to build this boat is using traditional Scandinavian methods, materials. From what I've read that means all oak, rivets (copper?), pine tar. Check this guy out. He's Finnish. http://www.puuvene.net/phuhta/english.htm

I suppose this boat could be built with glue lapstrake method. Either way probably good to do a practice boat first.

Is that exterior ballast on the bottom?

Looks like it, and no centerboard. Keelboat.

If you built it modern glued lap no-oak you could put the saved weight into the keel and get a stiffer boat.

And if you use one of them as model you can built it entirely out of plastic to make it better

They are absolutely beautiful boats, if you build the hull with oak, pine, cedar, plywood, strip or fiberglass they will all still be gorgeous boats. As oak planking is somewhat unusual it would seem that there are some very reasonable alternatives available, some of which would make for a boat that was easier to build, lighter and possibly less costly but of course that is entirely up to the builder to decide what is best for them i.e. if you want to plank a boat in oak - by all means plank it in oak.
