I'm looking to build a 7'10" Acorn dinghy to Ian Oughtred's design. Anyone out there build one? I'm looking for finished photos.

Thanks

Go to http://homestead.juno.com/snicaise/files/lappweb.htm. I finished her last summer, her name is "Surprise". I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Rick

Ah shucks, now I can't get it to work. Do a search and look under "Pictures of Surprise" in the "Building & Repair" section. Rick

Try removing the period after htm at the end of the URL. It worked for me.

landlocked,
That boat is light ..... or you've got it sitting on an 8 inch paint can in 9 inches of water.
What a beautiful job.

Well done; a beautiful boat.

What's her carrying capacity? Her weight? How does she handle in confused 3-4 foot waves? How long did she take you to build?

Long-term, I need to build a dinghy, and will appreciate any comments.

Alan

Rick, Great looking craft.

What thickness is the planking material?

Thanks everybody. The photos were just dumb luck. It's kind of a joke in the family that I can't take a picture to save my life but the water and light were just perfect. She is light but I was standing in the cockpit of an Island Packet 320 with a 4' draft with the camera; she settles down nicely with a crew. I had her out in Anapolis harbor one windy night with very choppy conditions (actually her maiden voyage) with my wife and six year old. Combined weight was about was about 370 lbs. and she handled with aplomb. I think she wieghs about 85-90 lbs. That's what Iain says though I haven't actually weighed her. Planking thickness, if I recall correctly is 5/16ths" I think she sure would be beautiful built traditionally clinker. Time to build is a real good question. I started her in the summer of '99, let it sit all winter and launched her in the beginning of June 2000. Since woodworking is my hobby I rarely keep track of time. I make tha analogy with golf: how long does it take to play a seasons worth of rounds? Best to everyone, Rick.

The Acorn is one of the best overall dinks I've ever rowed or built. She'll handle 3 crew in a harbour chop with ease, and I blush for her when folks comment about her at a dock. Ian's plans make a nice boat. Below is a link for some pics. Find " additional pics" link on this page for some detail pics. Happy building!

If you have any specific questions , please post them or email me. I'd be happy to lend my two cents. - best , Gary
