What would be the comparison in between Eric jr and a Grey seal(a grey seal 10% longer or a maybe.... great seal)?
All of above in terms of building economy, maintenance, comfort, performancies.. etc etc

W. Atkin Eric, Jr. (http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Sail/EricJr.html)

One fact speaks volumes: Eric, Jr. has 3,400 pounds of iron ballast in the keel, another 200 pounds inside and total displacement of 7,000 pounds. That would make her about twice as much boat as Grey Seal in building terms.

There was an "Eric Jr." around Chester, Nova Scotia, back in the 1970's. She had been modified somewhat - a gaff cutter rig with moderate bowsprit, and a full width flush deck (likely a tad lower than the trunk cabin on the plans). She was a salty looking little vessel and while I never met the owner nor saw her sailing, the general impression I was given was that she was very fine indeed.

The really hard part is wondering if Eric, Jr. is 3 times the boat for twice the work.

I also have the study plans for "Eric Jr" but prefer the gaff/cutter rig.

Atkin's "Gary Thomas" is about the size you are looking at and she is quite nice as a gaff/cutter. The study plans are an article from "MotorBoating" and has a lot of details. I think the plans are $125 from the Atkins site.

Atkin's design # 311 in "Of Yachts and Men" is a bit larger version of "Eric Jr" and a bit smaller than "Eric" but was designed much later . # 311 was a compilation of his successful 22 foot "Dormouse" and the Colin Archer type. I just love the lines of the gaff/cutters with a spoon bow... Plans $200

Just thought I'd throw in some other Atkin designs for interest...

The design for 'Tern' is a very nice boat, also. I believe it is a 30' transon boat. The designs in Rudder's Build Your Own Boat are mostly Atkins.

"Tern" is a very nice design with shallow draft. A WB member in the northwest e-mailed me that a "Tern" was built and in his area. I have been trying to get some photos of her.

Atkin designed some really nice boats.

Tern...

thanks all
New drawings, like i needed them lol, other wood on the fire.
I think ill stick to the plan "Folkboat if buying or restoring, Grey Seal if building".
But all the others plan Bs, and Cs and Ds ... are so appealing. I wish i had 100 million dollars and 10 lives to build and sail all the stuff that i like.
