Can any of the smaller traditional looking sailboats be comfortable? (Poodck, Catspaw, Shearwater, Gannett, Penobscot, etc.) I am looking for a first boat to build, I've never been in a sailboat before, just want to putter around on small local lakes. For 2 people, easy launch and set up (unstayed?). I have a bad back and would like some kind of support/ backrest. Would side bences be more comfortable than just twarts? Would a wider beam be neccessary for side benches?

If you can sit down inside the cockpit, you may want to consider adding the Melonseed skiff to your list (plans sold through the WoodenBoat Store). My understanding is that its simple rig and ease of launch are considered strong points of the boat.

Oh, and it's easy on the eyes, too ;) .

About a month from now, after I have tried them myself, I will let you know if they are comfortable and back friendly.

If its a small sailboat you'll probably spend most of your time sitting on one side or the other so side benches often get more use than thwarts. I'd suggest getting creative on your own, taking a stock design and then adding whatever backrest suits your particular needs. A little lumbar support or whatever won't hurt.
