View Full Version : What to build (rebuild)

The prospect of shop space has me contemplating potential projects.

1) I have the plans for Bahama Mamma, which I bought about five years ago. It's a tack and tape shallow draft cruiser, thirty feet, nice design. A sort of hard chined, flat bottomed Presto for plywood, but with a stayed ketch rig. But all that googe!

2) I just recieved study plans for a smaller, traditionally built Atkin design. It too is shallow draft, but a bit less of a boat, ie smaller, and likely less weatherly and able.

3) Find a worthy re-build.

4) ??? I'm sure there are a multitude of options.

The prospect is to spend the next three or four years on said project and then head south, the Bahmamas and the Caribean. The shop is 24 by 36.

Any thoughts?

IMOOP, that is, do the new build.
What Atkins are we talking about here that modified Seabright motor sailer type? If so are the body plan lines included? Recall we spoke about that in your other thread here.

How much time, REALISTICALLY, are you planning to spend on her per day/week/month??
Got access to a 16 band soar for them sawn frames?

And a whole bunch of other questions that will need answers from you before you return the favour, so to speak.

<insert winky smile here>

I'm sorry about the quality of this, but it's posted. This is the Atkin.

Ish,

If I had the time to do it and was really thinking about extended cruising I would think about Devlin's Oysta.

Jack, give a yell, a good substantial yell* for DonnW to show you how to scan and enlarge that page, in fact all pages. I tried, in my clumsy fashion to do such and got nowhere, sigh.
But using my trust Bausch and Lomb 2X power magnifing glass I was able to make out the shape of the frames.
I don't see that much difficulty in the lofting nor the building of that craft.

But I sure would like to see a good scan of it, ayup I would.

*sometime off Forum I will tell you about the background of that phrase. Might give you a chuckle.
