Penobscot 17

Arch Davis' Penobscot 17 is a beautiful looking boat. Anybody out there built or sailed one? Any comments?

I haven't built or sailed Penobscot 17 (or 14). I have the plans for Penobscot 14 and they are first class - clear, accurate and very detailed.

I have the plans for the Penobscot 14. Come hell or high water (actually high water is pretty likely since I live on the banks of the Penobscot River!!) I'm building it this summer. The only reason I didn't get the plans for the Penobscot 17, was that Arch Davis hadn't published them yet. I was some bummed when I saw them. It is a pretty boat.
Do a search on Arch Davis or Penobscot 14. There's a gentleman named Mower who has built the 14. He might have some useful info about building an Arch Davis design.

I'm well into the construction of a Penobscot 17 and just turned the hull over this past weekend. I'm in unheated quarters so the winter weather has slowed things down, but I'm trying to get some of the inside piece work (rudder, masts) done in the meantime. I'm very pleased with the design. I think Arch Davis has done a great job of rethinking plywood, epoxy and tradition. The bulkheads just seem to naturally blend into the structure of the boat without looking like the very effective building frames that they are.

Jim, check his website, here's the page for the Penobscot 17. There are a couple of pictures and a couple of drawings. No study plans on the web page, though. I paid about 8 bucks for the Penobscot 14 study plans.

I built his Sand Dollar and an quite pleased with it. It Row and sails well. Has anyone sailed the Penobscot 17
