This may be too much to ask for, but I have been searching for a good design for a 17 to 19 foot runabout that I would set up with a center console and moderate (90-100HP) outboard. I like the lines of the WB design San Juan Dory, but would like more of a "V" to help cut through the Puget Sound chop. Hope to use battened plywood construction. I've been building furniture for years and this would be my first venture into constructing something that floats. In other words, somthing a novice builder can take on that won't look like a plywood box when done. Any suggestions?

Check out BoatPlans-Online (http://www.boatplans-online.com) for Jacques C19 & C17 Open - get over to his technical support site and look up JimW - for his report on the C19

A Tolman should do the trick. I'm a first time builder, and find the construction of my widebody to be streaightforward.

You might try Spira Internatioinal (http://www.spirainternational.com/) (wonder why he gets so little recognition in this forum?).

These center consoles come in 16', 18', and 20' lengths.

Here's another design to add to the cunfusion. It's my version of a Tracy Obrien V19 Deadrise. Its a 2000 w/over 1200 hours on it. It has proven to be a comfoftable boat for fishing and cruising. A winshield w/a mahogany frame has now been added.J.M. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid40/p73ff8e303c0eec235e1bda42b1bba5ac/fd016ec7.jpg

There are a number of hulls from Glen-L.com that would be fine center consoles in that range and the designs are suitbale I would think for batten construction. Just look at all the 17-19 foor non stitch and glue hulls and then put n a center console and alter the forward arrangement.

Or you could dod a simmons sea skiff-that's more of a challenge than a "basic" plywood hull and from what i hear a fine boat. (try www.oldwharf.com (http://www.oldwharf.com) )

But the best boats in that size are probably are stich and glue-- Glen-L console skiff (a bit short), Tolman Skiff, Tracy Obriens V-20 (longer but nice) and if I recall, Dave sent me some plans for 20 ft'er that would do very well with lower power- anarrow design that half FAO fishing boat and half Carbiana. Frankly if I had the space, that is what I would build. Longer and a narrower rather than thr trend to shorter wider craft.

I would also second the tracy o'brien designs. Fairly easy to build and he's located in washington. Here is a link to the site if you haven't found it already. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Woodzowl, Do you have any other photos of your Deadrise 19? The O'brien website only has minimal pictures. Your boat appears to be close to what I've been searching for. Can you give me any other info, such as construction methods, performance etc? Thanks

The Simmons Sea-Skiff 20 (19' 2"OA) would be ideal. Check <simmonsseaskiff.com>

The Downeaster 18 is terrific. I built it as an I/O, my friend in Maine but it as an outboard. While the plans also accommodate a typical runabout design, we both constructed ours as center console. I run on the near Great Lake shores (3-5 miles out and along Cape Cod. Allan runs his off the coast of a Desert Isle, Maine. I've had it in some pretty rough seas 8-10 ft. Wouldn't want to do that again, but I lived to tell the story ... she handled incredibly well given the circumstance. I tow the kids on skis, fish, and just cruise with the wife on inland waters (Mississippi R., Illinois R., etc. Speed is about 40 mph. It continues to impress me what a great design it is. Plans are from Wooden Boat and construction was documented in Wooden Boat magazines. I can't remember which ones, but can find out if you are interested.
