Hello All,

I'm new to the forum. Hope that someone can answer this one for me. In the Calendar of WoodenBoats for 2004, the August picture is that of a Sound Interclub Sloop. She's lovely, and would sail well on Ghost Lake near Cochrane in Alberta (close to Calgary).

Can anyone tell me where the plans can be procured?

Thank you,

Bill

I hope someone answers your question, but.... Mower's plans are somewhat scattered. I would guess Mystic Seaport, Ships Plans Dept., but they could be in NYC or Philly too, Maritime Museums. Good luck. Fine sailing boats!

I have a sound interclub sloop, and I have a reduced drawing of her plans form a book. Mine was owned by a world cup captain, and I can say it is the most beautiful sailing vessell afloat in my opinion. Feel free to contact me at:

I was admiring that phot and design just the other day! If you find out where to get plans, let us know here will you?

Thanks!

What's a "world cup"?

Hi All
looks like Mystic has the plans in there Mower Collection
here's the listing.

Mower Collection Dates:1897-1939 Extent:433 sheets representing 107 designs Abstract:Mower's original drawings for yachts in power and sail, including sloops, yawls, cat boats, schooners, ketches, cutters, and power launches. 9.103UNIDENTIFIED ; 28.25 ft. Vineyard Sound Interclub Class sloopDesigner, Charles D. Mower; Design #752; Builder, Reuben Bigelow; 1928

Mower designs are great! some real performance oriented small boats.
his Massachusetts Bay 18' class (18 ft waterline) is even more beautifull than the interclub (thats saying something!)
Mass Bay 18 was an inspiration for my Ipswich Bay 18 (18 ft on deck 12 1/2 waterline). http://dansdories.googlepages.com/Slide30.JPG/Slide30-large.jpg (http://dansdories.googlepages.com/Slide30.JPG/Slide30-full.jpg)
for more I.B. 18 and other waterline class sloops please see my web page

As an owner of a Mower designed boat, I can tell you that very few of his designs are in Mystic as his offices burned and the plans too, sometime in the late forties I believe.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Vineyard Sound Interclub is not the same as the (Long Island) Sound Interclub, which was 29+'. I wouldn't be surprised if they looked almost identical though.

There are images of Sound Interclubs in this Rosenfeld collection, along with some pretty spectacular others: http://www.rosenfeldcollection.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=rosenfeld.shop&category=92

Having owned a Sound Interclub for the past several years (the one in the Calendar photo), I can't resist a comment: They're great boats—beautifully balanced, move in the lightest air (like they're on ball bearings, as one yacht-designer friend said.)

The SICs and the Vineyard Sound Interclubs are not the same boats. I'm pretty sure that the plans for the class do not exist. However, I know a restorer who has scaled up the lines published in Edwin Schoettle's book, Sailing Craft, and used those with success to re-establish his hull's shape. I suppose you could do the same for new construction. I'd be happy to provide construction and hardware details.

VERY nice boat you have there. It looks like a smaller version of Olin Stephens GIMCRACK (a favorite I've mentioned before) notable for its simplicity.
