I ripped these from the thread on double enders?
I'd appreciate any comments on her hull. She reminds me of some of the ULDB race boats.
She's Sydney Herreshoffs' Arion.

Appearantly so..

Don't forget the french canadian voyaging
canoes of the great lakes.

Here is a india builder that is building canoes
up to 50 ft. and 75 horse outboard.

Fascinating ... a 50 foot canoe with a beam of 80 inches, a depth of 36 inches. And it supposedly has a carrying capacity of 4500 kg -- about 9900 pounds!

If you scale the dimensions by one-third: 16-2/3 feet long, 26-2/3 beam, 12 inches deep.

What are the length and beam for the Sydney Herreshoff boat? I can't read the print on the drawing, but she sure looks like a canoe to me.

This leads to an obvious question: what would happen if you bolted a weighted keel to the bottom of a typical 16-17 foot canoe, and added a sail rig? Might be a fun experiment.

Sidney Herreshoff is one of my favorite designers. The Hodgdon 21 sailboat has a similar shape though more slack in the bilge (and a transom). I suspect Sonny Hodgdon was influenced by Sidney's designs. I saw another Sidney Herreshoff design this past weekend and she was a beaut. No pictures yet, but I'm trying to get some.

Steve, that's essentially how many of the dedicated sailing canoes were built - only most (but not all) used a big steel plate centerboard, rather than a fixed fin for a keel. In any case, it provides a substantial amount of ballast and allows a bigger, taller rig than just bolting a sail rig to a regular open canoe.

In the '50's (Late, it may have even been early '60's)a local boatbuilder designer built Herreshoffs ( LFH)sailing machine complete with canting keel! either 48 or 50 ft IIRC.
How it went was irrelevant because of course, it had no one to race against. The canting keel was not legal or accepted.

Hey John,

Would that be Fiery Cross, Jim Young?

Have the original plans for Arion ever been found?

Those lines (above) were taken from the fiberglass hull - if I remember correctly. I dont think the web-site mentions where the plans for the rigging came from.

I wonder if the plans have been found?

I imagine Damian McLaughlin looked into getting lines and sailplan for his ARION from somewhere (MIT Museum or The Anchorage perhaps) rather than making his own. But you could try contacting him through the website.
