The bowsprit and jib are not original, but she looks pretty good with them, doesn't she? And I bet she flies along very nicely. One point...if the boat balanced decently under the original pirogue rig, does the addition of the jib give her lee helm? Surely, she is something to think about...

Folks are always bringing up Munroe's Egret for discussion. I found the pictures and thought I would post them for anyone thinking about building her.

I've read that she has excessive weather helm as designed. Or I should say the WB version has excessive weather helm, as it's an attempt to recreate Munroe's design, not his actual design itself.

On this particular boat, they didn't simply add a jib. It isn't apparent from the photo, but the sail plan was revised to make her a schooner, rather than a ketch.

Mr. Bradley has a really nice trailerable "Egret" built very strong and he just recently put copper plating on the bottom.

ps Venchka, apparently you and I have very similar tastes in boats. Tending towards traditional, but willing to embrace modern construction - not to the exclusion of traditional methods of construction. I always look forward to your posts.

Parker has two of these I think, one traditional, and one modern. He doesn't have descriptions of all his boats on his site, I think this might be the trad version.

There is a modern version in his Sharpie book, but I'm not sure whether it is close to his modern one. Check his price list for all available plans.

The issue with the Egret is that the original lines, as far as we know, come from a cargo carrying service. And the boards suck. The rig has it's points. So lowering the transom, and increasing the board efficiency, and cleaning up the interior would be priorities. Since the original lines don't exist (recently found?) you can do what you like as long as it has the feel, and then call it an Egret.

Did anyone see that Egret (?) in the Wooden Boat magazine- it was the issue 'the 20 best boats voted by Woodenboat staff' or something similar, year 2000?, it was the magazine issue with the silver cover. The boat had a light blue deck. Can someone post a picture please?

Does anyone know where to find plans for Munroes's other boats? How large of a boat could the Egret concepts be applied to? She's basically an undercanvassed dory. Were his other boats characterized by seaworthiness.

Not sure if the boat I'm thinking of fits your needs, but...

There was a mid-30's foot boat at the Wooden Boat Festival in Biloxi, MS in 2001 & again in 2002. The details are fuzy. The boat was from Alabama. From a Chapelle design in one of his books. Sharpy for sure. Two masts, either schooner or ketch. Somebody at the Seafood Museum might know the boat and it's owners.

Most of Munroe's plans were lost in a hurricane in 1926. One of his EGRET boats was measured for the HAMMS project and plans are at the Smithsonian. R. P. Beebe drew plans for PRESTO(41'), UTILIS(32'), and WABUN(40')(all the round bottom Presto type), available from the Mystic Seaport Museum Ships Plans Dept. Tne ALICE was built to Alden plans using the lines of Munroe's CARIB(52'). The plans for Alice are published in Henry Howard's books about the ALICE and may be available from the John G. Alden Co. It would be nice if plans were available for Munroe's larger sharpies like ALLAPATTA, as well as the other Prestos. Both Pete Culler and S.S. Crocker designed boats based on the Presto ideas, which plans are available.
