Not to flood this topic with questions, but has anybody built, saild or seen a version of the windward? I am looking at the 24 and would like to see a photo of the completed boat, and any personal thoughts on it's handeling.

I built a Windward 15 and have sailed it a lot over the last couple of years. Nice boat, easy to rig and fairly uncomlicated to build. Rick

Nice pictures. I appreciate it. The weather looks nice also. I am on the fence between a 25'-30'sharpie, and the windward design. I know that many of the sharpie designs by nature do not sail well to windward. How does the windward perform?
Thanks Daniel.

The original owner's name is listed on the web page with the pictures. If he's in the book, give him a call. The weather was exactly like those pictures today. Far cry from the soggy week before.

Folks in Australia swear by Bruce Kirby's Norwalk Island sharpies. Sail like crazy. 23' and 26' foot models available. The 23' has always looked like a lot bigger boat than the Windward 24. Just my opinion.

Daniel if you are interested in sharpies you can find info on the NIS boats at www.norwalkislandssharpie.org (http://www.norwalkislandssharpie.org) My boat included, Scout, a 23'. Hopefully I'll be able to comment on it's sailing manners soon. Dan.

Thank you for the heads up regarding the NIS. I thought I had looked at nearly every shallow draft boat ever drawn, from lee board barges to San Jaun Island Sharpies. I don't know how I missed it. When you go out on Scout, post some details, I am always interested to hear the tales. Thanks again. Dan

I too am very interested in the Karl Stambaugh windward designs. I downloaded study plans for the Windward 21 and I liked what I saw!

It would be great to hear comments about how this boat performs.... strengths & weaknesses.

This boat seems to meet all my requirements.

-Traditional looks
-Quick to build
-Beachable & trailerable
-Simple and easy to rig
-Mizzen for single handed control
-Cuddy to keep things dry
-Small enough for a quick day sail, big enough to keep four adults feeling safe.
-A transome to hang the evil (but necessary) Outboard

I like everything about this boat!

Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? Probably as good as any sharpie. In general they don't like a lot of wind and wave, although there are a few accounts on record of adventurous sailors taking sharpies beyond their usual limitations. Also the flat bottom means little headroom in the cabin but that rarely matters for day sailing or overnighting.
