Now that the honey-do (paint the house) is honey-done, I'm back to attacking my restoration project, a 1956 Scottie Craft 18ft. outboard cruiser.

I'm replacing some bottom panels (plywood). On the 12ft skiff I built a few years back, I laid 3m 5200 between the bottom panels and chines. Y'all have convinced me that "3m 5200 is the devil," so I'm looking at Sikaflex for this project.

Which one? 291? 291LOT (replaces 231 and 240, according to Jamestown Distributors)?

291 is the stuff. But watch it. It has a property not as yet fully understood, and in my experience unique and if we could only harness it we would have the secret of interstellar space travel. It only applies to the black stuff and not to the white as far as I can make out.
Here is how it works, If you use it, out in the barn and well away from the house. Even if you wear paper throwaway overalls, disposable gloves and such, and be very very careful to avoid going back to the house, within an hour of opening the tube and using it, there will be a scream of rage from in the house and a feminine voice, distorted with anger, will be wanting to know "WHO PUT THIS BLACK STUFF ON THE BATHROOM TAPS!!!!!"

Ergo, all we have to do is to send some bathroom taps to Mars, coat the spacecraft in Sikaflex and voila! instantly there.

Hmmm...maybe I'll just use white!

Thanks.

I would say it depends on how much elasticity you think you need. Polyurethane sealants like 3M 5200 and the various Sikaflex products all have a good glueing capacity. Their "hardness" is measured on the Shore A scale. High number, hard stuff. Low number, soft stuff. The hard ones are used more like glues, the soft ones more like seam compounds. 3M 5230 is Shore 60 and itīs a glue. 5200 is Shore 50, 5300 is Shore 40, Sikaflex 291 is Shore 35, Sikaflex 290DC (the deck caulk)is also Shore 35, Tremflex 25 is Shore 25 and Sikaflex HP 1 is Shore 15.

So, it depends on what you want to do and how you want to do it. smile.gif
