The Tornado cat is today probably about the fastest sailboat that can be built from timber and still carried on a trailer. I have always been interested in the construction method used for this boat. Ran across 2-sets of plans for the boat this morning for the first time, English and Russian. I have seen portions of these plans before, but not the whole thing. Fascinating stuff. If you are interested, go here:

Here are some teasers of what is in this link:

They're nice boats, complete with a national class, and even an Olympic class,to race in. I often wonder if that's what I should have built.

The Tornado: in its first Olympics, it was the fastest and most spectacular of the Olympic classes. Now, after the turn of the century, it is still that boat, the fastest, most exciting, most spectacular of the Olympic boats.http://www.athens2004.com/

Multihull open - Tornado
The Tornado is the fastest boat competing in the Olympics. It measures 6.09 metres (20ft) long and can reach speeds of 30 knots. A crew of two athletes competes in this Olympic category ever since the 1972 Games in Munich. This category is open to both men and women.

I thoroughly enjoyed my years racing the Tornado - but if you are thinking of building one, let me use just two words to describe them:

Brutal & Exhilarating

IIRC the Tornado used to hold the speed record at 37+ knots. I know that I've overtaken the Manly ferry at a rapid rate - and it runs at 18 knots.

I've still got my Tornado - but the hulls are down the South Coast - one with a hole in it - and that's a job that's a long way down my list at the moment.
