I own a rebuilt 19'x4'-4" Y-stern Chestnut freighter. Unlike standard "sport" canoes, there are few old freighters still around, because they tended to be bought for utilitarian uses, worked hard, used up, and abandoned, rather than ending up stored in garages and barns. A few builders currently offer new freighter models: Northwoods and Island Falls in Maine and West Coast Canoe Co. in British Columbia. There may be others.

Up in the James Bay basin, they're as indispensable as the snowmobile.

Right, Bruce; I should have said that south of James Bay freighters were rare.... because way north is where they all tended to go ... and stay. I have no idea how mine ended up in California (!!!), where I acquired it.

Yikes, on the VERY DAY that I expound on the rarity of frieght canoes, eBay makes a liar out of me:

Not exactly freighter canoes, but would serve the same function:

Gil Gilpatrick's book contains plans for a 20' x 42" canoe that is a stipper. That is on my build list. The loaded waterline is 1500#.

Hold it, if you want to ring the towel dry check www.dngoodchild.com (http://www.dngoodchild.com) - look under small craft and Teslin #5333. It is kinda a halfbreed of a freighter canoe and a skinny john boat. And is only 23 feet long, not bad, looks real interesting, and appearantly a pretty old design. It also reminds me of a lot of the utility type craft you see on national geographic out of Thailand and that part of the world.Appearantly these where built and used in the yukon in the early 1900's. Might be better then a freighter canoe.

I recently completed a 24' strip/epoxy freight
canoe. I'm willing to share a photo if someone can give me a few tips on posting a photo to this forum.

It is a custom design by Larry Bordine at Grand Traverse Boatworks http://www.gtboatworks.com/
Larry will design a canoe, boat or kayak for $150.00
I will attempt to post a photo and if this works I will follow-up with a couple more. Here we go....

popeye:
my best guess is 350 - 400 lbs., this is based on the fact that I was able to lift one end of the canoe off my shop floor (using my legs it was a bit of a grunt)
