Being an owner of a small Gaff-Cutter (Typ: Waterbug) I am looking for other yachts of that type still sailing. My Yacht was constructed and built by Stuart Uphams from Uphams upon Brixham 1950 after an adopted Harrison Butler Design. Anybody who owns a Yacht of that Type, or knows somebody who does, or did, please post.
I am naturally also interested in anything else about "Uphams upon Brixham" or "Harrison Butler" (Plans, Fotos ...). Does anyone know somebody owning an Engelyn-design Yacht?

I can give you part of an answer from memory, and perhaps more tomorrow after I go home and refresh my memory with a book that I have from maybe 40 years ago.
The Upham yard built the Mayflower II. A book was written on her building and on the voyage to Plymouth, with much about the Uphams, both in prose and in photos. The book was written by the English promoter of the project, Warwick Charlton, and is entitled "The Second Mayflower Adventure," published probably in 1957 or '58.
Alan Villiers served as Captain for the voyage across. He wrote something on it too, but I can't remember where. National Geographic, perhaps. It is likely that "LIFE" magazine covered the story also. You might look in the "Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature" at your local library.
Stuart Upham, and the work that the Uphams and their yard did on this project were highly regarded, and much was published about them in connection with the Mayflower II.
Upham people went across on her, and helped to fix some problems with her as they arose. No one was fully conversant with all of the details of the hull and rigging on a vessel this old, or with the strategies for sailing her either.
Fair winds,
Alan
P.S. (01/24) I had the author's name and the book's title right. It was published in 1957 by Little, Brown & Co. (in the U.S.--- don't know who was the U.K. publisher).

You might find interesting a book I've had for many years, now probably out of print but available on Interlibrary Loan: Cruising Yachts, Design and Performance, by T. Harrison Butler. Features many designs and drawings. Adlard Coles, Limited.

If you're interested in Harrison Butler yachts you really ought to join the Harrison Butler Association, whose president is the daughther of THB. Members get a twice-yearly newsletter, a Design Catalogue showing all of THB's designs that have been built and enjoy get-togethers on and off the water several times a year. The Year Book contains a list of members and their boats so will be able to get in touch with those that own (or have owned) 'Englyn' designs.
And all for £10 (sterling - it must be sterling) a year!!
To join, write to the Honorary Treasurer, Harrison Butler Association, 102 North Street, Downend, BRISTOL BS16 5SF, UK.
PS I expect the President will also sell you a copy of the latest edition of 'Cruising Yachts: Design and Performance'.
