Murray Petersons Susan design? Im curious as to how "complete" they are... REALLY complete? like down to the hardware complete?

Speaking with Bill by email he says the plans are very complete but I should perhaps consider getting the castings for the deck hardware from him as he can get them done for a better price up there and just do the machining down here... I am waiting for him to get back with an all inclusive price... plans are $850US which Im happy to pay and shes happy Ive decided on {gawd sheilas eh! little does she know little does she know ;) } and I was wondering if anyone actually had the plans what issues in this area would I find if I decided to do it myself or through a foundry down here...

Oh I recall someone telling me and sending me a pic of Susan done as a cutter... well from what Bill said in his email someones built her!!! Gawd I hope the buggar sends some pics the sketch Ive seen sure looks sweet and as a schooner shes near bloody perfect but as a cutter in the flesh?... Man Im dyin to see that!!

aaaaaaaaaahhhhgeeeeeeeeeezzz mate! Ol Murray could sure design a stunning boat couldnt he!

Some fine beautiful boats there... gawd I love this place! The porn is amazing! :D

And Susan is what 28 - 30ft LOA? from what Ive learned she has plenty of room above and below decks and gives the impression of a heck of a lot bigger boat... Definantly the one... not anywhere near impossible to build and not anywhere near the league of work required for the Coaster!!

The more I see of her the more I know this will be the one.

Hey Wild Dingo...

I don't have the plans (not yet!) but she is on the top of my list. I have some info ...see below.

The following article on "Susan" as a gaff/cutter appeared in the Nov/Dec 2004 issue of Ocean Navigator. issue # 142. Bill told me of it and I went out and bought the issue.

The specs are wrong, as the boat is the dimensions of the original "Susan"...LOD 28' 6"...If you can't find the article I can email you a hi res copy or mail you one.

An enlargement of the illustration from the article...the specifications are wrong...I typed them on the drawing from the info in the article. The author of the article did not have the right imformation. The hull was an orignal "Susan".

Heres the drawing of the cutter rig... I haven't seen the plans, but this is a nice drawing. The bowsprit would be a bit longer for aesthetic appeal.

A composite I put together on "Susan"...

THANKS Rod!! Shes topshelf in my book! Id sure appreciate the email info mate as I dont think the snail mail will make it here before we move!
Thanks again

On reflection I think the parts not available Bill spoke to me about would have to be all those brass bits and bobs shown in the pic of the fella with the house

No worries thanks again mate

Htom,

What source are the writeups on Susan from?

I have the chapter from Roger Taylor's "Good Boats Series" but nothing else.. I would be interested in them if other than Good Boats...

One is from Roger Taylor's "Best of the Good Boats" (selections from the four Good Boats series; I assume it's the same as the writeup there); the other is from Richard Henderson's "Choice Yacht Designs". Email/Private Message a snail address if you want copies.

Sorry to get your hopes up, guys. I've had a major brain fart, it seems, and the article that I thought was about Susan in Henderson's Choice Yacht Designs was about Coasters, and it's in Taylor's book, not Henderson's. But I'll send the copies of the Susan article to you anyway, as well as the article about the Al Mason M-31, which must have been what I was thinking about. If either of you want the article about the Murray Coasters in Taylor's book, speak up, I'm not getting to the post office until Saturday.

Cost of mailer: $ free (household supply)
Cost of copies: $ free (household services)
Cost of air post to Burnswick Junction: $ about as much as a magazine
Total: $ not worth worrying about

Value of imagining Wild Dingo jogging down to the mailbox every day for the five to seven business days they say it will take (should be there by the 15th): Priceless.

Enjoy, Shane!

Earth to Wild Dingo. Earth to Shane. Calling Shane Down Under!

WoodenBoat #184 has an article on the cutter version of SUSAN. I guess they were reading your mind. It is the same boat written up in Ocean Navigator. They even used the same photo of the house top being built off-site.

Enjoy.

Hey Shane,

Notice the cockpit combing added on the gaff/cutter version in the current WB magazine.

I think it was a mistake and I bet Bill Peterson did't like it at all.

This article has some good photos for you to see the cockpit area, etc...
