The pictures aren't great, but perhaps you can see the very thin crack/check in the second picture. It's parallel to the bottom, and in the left lower corner. There are several of them in this area.

Running the line end to end on the right shows a max variation of about 1/4", on the left about 1/8". On the bias shown, about 1/8", and on the other about 1/4". I've got 3/4" to play with in thickness, to these issues don't appear to be show stoppers. The other issue, however, depending on how things can be laid out, could prove awkward at least. Hopefully tomorrow I'll roust a few locals and turn it over to have a look at the other side, and give it a dose of "secret sauce".

I confess not following progress closely, but I assume this plank is to be a new plank keel?

I don't see anything untoward in the photos. Say some more. Some checking is normal, though I've never worked with angelique.

Heavy, through cracks in the ends are a different matter. Cut them out.

Take your time. Think it out. Work as many checks as possible out, don't be nervous. smile.gif

Hmmmmm. Well OK, I guess that's all there is.

Rolled it over and it now has quite a bow with the opposite surface up. On the now right side (left in above picture) the bow is 1.25". On the left side (right in above picture) the bow is 1". To be clearer, perhaps, it's high in the middle (completely off one support), low at the ends, with a bit of twist tossed in for good measure.

With our Angelique timbers, I found they only really stopped moving once painted, and heavily, with thick red lead. I bathed them (literally poured raw linseed) in oil for weeks, and only slowed the movement of the ring shakes we had.

as I recall... in our keel timber (darn near the same size / proportions) we had some cupping as well. Running it through a gigantic thickness planer after roughing out the shape and smoothing the curves(close, but not knat's butt tight) removed the cupping, and it never really came back... that was the lateral cupping. the longitudinal cupping I used to match the very slight bow in the original keel...don't know, and never will, if it was supposed to be bowed.
