I am considering building Ken Hankinson's Barrelback 19. Has anyone out there built it?
Any insight would be apprieciated.

Hi,

I'm currently building the Biscayne 22 from Hankinson. I'm sure the contruction techniques are identical and the plans of similar quality.

The plans and instructions are complete in terms of you can build the boat from the information given. However, there is plenty of research that goes along with a project of that size.

For instance:

What is the best way to buy wood and what kind(s).
What epoxy do I want to use.
What motor do I want.
What tools are necessary and do I have them
Do I have the space to build it...

I have some pictures at:

Also, you can see a similar boat and very detailed instructions at:

Good Luck!

Tools and space are my biggest concern.

Can you build a 19 foot boat in a 18 x 20 foot space?

I think that may be a bit tight, unless there is a door that you can poke the end of the boat out while you are working on it.

One goal I'm trying to stick to is to fabricate as many of the components as possible before assemble, since once I set up the frames, it will be a little tight for a while. Once the hull is complete and flipped, I plan on making a rolling cradle so I can move it around easier.

As for tools - this construction technique has seen the follwoing get a lot of use:

Bandsaw, tablesaw, jig saw, surface planer, jointer, router and router table, many different hand planes, cabinet scraper, plus sharpening equipment and tons of clamps.

This selection is what I have used so far, as I progress through the different stages of construction, I suspect some tools will change.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Nearly done with Hankinsons Biscayne 22. good set of plans for amateurs. the 20 foot barn will be tight but if you put the bow the 1 foot back from the wall andthe transome at the door so you can open the door to work when you need to you MIGHT pull it off. I say start the project, you will figure out how to do all sorts of problematic tasks during the project. good luck from CT, Mitchell

19' LOA in 18'x20' (diagonal is 26.9') ... if you put it diagonally across the space the boat will probably fit, but you'll have lots of problems fitting anything else into the leftover spaces. Things like bandsaw, plywood sheets, plank patterns, and the moaning chair. I'd think really hard about a building frame that I could roll about if I was going to try this.
