I am considering building Ian Oughtred's "Gannet". Is there anyone who has pictures of this boat under construction or completed? The only picture I have seen is a single photo on the Duck Flats Wooden Boats site. Also, I would appreciate any general comments on the boat anyone may have. I want a moderately fast sailing boat that will plane, as well as a boat that will take a 7hp to 10hp outboard and plane with say two adults. Thanks.

Welcome there Leo...

Iain has some fine designs doesnt he? Sadly I find waiting for duckflats to put pictures on the site rather slow... Im waiting for some pics of the "elf" just to convince myself she will be as vikingish as I thunk she will be

Someones bound to come and give you the lowdown on Gannet... best of luck

Take it easy

HI Leo. I have the plans for "Gannet" and have cut out the plywood moulds. I'm just finishing up my kitchen remodeling job, and as soon as we can eat at home again, I'll set up the building frame and get started.
After studying several plans for months, including "Wee Seal", Stevensons' Weekender and Vacationer, and "Grey Seal","Euna Mara", Golant Gaffer and "Tosher", I decided it would be best to build a smaller boat first and make all those mistakes that are inevidible. Also my son and crew wants to fish the local Northern California lakes. So I looked at Iain's catalog with a more open mind. "Gannett" seems to fit the bill for the optimum size for sailing and outboard for two. Of the three in that series (Shearwater, Gannet, and Fulmar) Gannet seems to be the best choice for what we want to do. I plan to build it a little heavier with a steel centerboard for a little ballast, and I want to try both the cat rig and the gunter sloop rig. The photo of Gannet on the Duckflat site really sold it.
I have not found anything else about Gannet on the web. I did find a site that has construction photos of Fulmar. Fulmar is almost identical to Gannet, but 2' 3" longer.
Take a look at
