I hadn't notice this one before.

The latest in Bill Garden's idea of the perfect kid's cruising boat. Simple enough to be put together in the garage, salty enough to daydream on, and safe enough as well.

LOA - 19'
LWL - 17' 4"
Beam - 7'
Draft - 2' 4"
Displ. - 2,384 lbs.
Sail Area - 210 sq. ft.
Construction: Plywood planking over sawn frames

In my never ending quest for the perfect plywood small cruiser I think this one is quite lovely. Looks like it would be quite a chore to rig for an afternoon sail, though. I wonder if Mr Garden would redraw the sail plan as a sloop?

The Cape Cutter 19 may be of interest to you;

It's the one I keep comeing back too.
Apart from having a single mast, it has some what similar lines.
There are two sail plans to the Cape Cutter.
I also believe it could be built in a double car garage.
I believe the online support from Dudley Dix would be excellent, he has replied quite promptly to all three of my emails.

All the best,
Doug

Jim,

Where might we find more information about this lovely small creature?

We seem to share the same quest.

In the Swamp. :D Wayne, we might find the plans for sale at The WoodenBoat Store, operated by our forum host. Go to Plans: Boatbuilding > Cruisers :D . It also says study plans are in Forty Wooden Boats. Let's ask around.

"Hey! Anybody out there got a copy of Forty Wooden Boats!!??"

I really like the hull, but I don't want all those strings to pull. Me simple guy.

Doug, yes, I agree. I keep an eye on the Dudley Dix boats, both the 19 and the 21. Very nice

The dimensions appear to be ever-so-slightly different but otherwise the boat looks just about exactly like the 18 foot cat schooner "June Bug" designed by Bill Garden in August 1945 and published in "The Rudder" around that time as a "How to Build" article. I have a photocopy if you're interested. It is indeed a most sweet little boat.

The original June Bug was 17'8" and had 140 sq. feet of sail, so it looks like Bill has put a rather bigger rig on this updated version.

Yes it is in 40 Wooden Boats. Double ender with a very slight V bottom, maybe 3" deadrise max, bolted on fin keel similar to his Toadstool. 3'-5" headroom, 1 cyl. inboard engine.

Thanks for the info. Its starting to sound a little small for me, though.

In "Boats To Go" Thomas Firth Jones has some interesting things to say about JUNE BUG's building and sailing characteristics in a brief chapter devoted to her. The slightly larger and newer version for which WB sells the plans may have had a few improvements worked into her to relieve some of JUNE BUG's shortcomings.

It sure is a nice boat. Above the waterline. Below the waterline it just isn't very trailer friendly. Now I remember where I saw it, and dismissed it based on weight and draft.

The search continues.

Issue 175 has a small cat schooner by Tad Roberts named CAPTAIN FLINT. Perhaps you could convince Tad to stretch her out a bit.

I heard somewhere..from somebody...(used to sail by his place all the time)....that Mr. Garden has sold his island...but has somehow made arrangements stay on as long as he likes.
