There have been some interesting comments on this design in earlier forums, and Headland Boats' (the designer) website in Brisbane Australia has a good selection of pics of Aus builders' boats, but if there are any of you out there with good pics,I would love to see them.
This boat, with its added ballast, seems to be the answer to the solo sailor's dream.
Not sure about the rig though...would like to see something simpler...any ideas?
I am close to deciding if this is my next boat,& would appreciate any future/current/past builders sharing with me their collective wisdom.
Thank you.
Al Burke.

Al, I'm building a Green Island 18 with my brother-in-law. We just finished the basic hull (meaning attaching side panels, bottom and transom to frames and stem and to each other). I think at least one other person on the forum (Greg Jackson) is much further along. Others are contemplating building a 15 but I don't recall anyone else saying that they have built or even started one.
I'd say be careful and check with Mike Roberts (the designer) before making any changes to the rigging as that can affect a large number of other factors. If you don't like a sloop rig, it probably is not the best design for you. There are a couple of recent threads on more simple boats if that is what you want. Good luck to you, and please keep me informed on what you choose. If you do build a GI 15, I'd like to hear how it goes for you, and you should certainly contact me with questions.

Hi Ausie,
You could talk to Ross Lillistone at Bayside wooden boats, I know he has made one and is also a distributer for Headland boats.

Chris & Lee,
Thanks for your replies.I know Ross & have visited his shop & seen what he does....wonderful wooden boats.
He & I have been discussing the merits of different rigs,& as he has built 2 GI15s & sailed a fair bit in them,he has a good feel for them.He is one of those designer/builders who looks for simplicity in a boat that is going to be used a lot, especially short-handed,& feels ,as I do, that the boat will be used far more if rigging/reefing/cost of rigging,to name a few objectives in a design, are kept simple & low-cost.This is not to be to the detriment of over-all performance,of course,& some degree of compromise will inevitably have to be accepted when choosing one rig over another it must be accepted. But ease of rigging, sail efficiency, ease of sail handling, especially single-handed which is one of my passions, are a few of the trade-offs which each builder will have to ponder when choosing a particular style of rigging. And the final rig should be considered suitable by the designer, even though he may not totally like it.
One such rig may be a balanced sprit-rig with jib....unstayed mast & all short spars.
Mind you,I like the gunter rig,but like to keep an open mind on alternatives.
Not long ago in a previous thread on the GI15 subject,a number of pics were offered by people who had experience with this boat.Since my computer died not long ago,all these images died with it as I had foolishly not copied them to a CD.I hope those people are seeing this & can be so kind as to send them again.
Cheers,
Al Burke,Newcastle,Australia.

G,day
I have looked at the Green Island 15/18 too and really like the versatility offered by the design, esp for the singlehander.
I know what you mean about the rig though, but have you seen the rig on the Amity Point 20 in his other designs?
I have just emailed Mike asking if he offers any other rigs for the Green Island (Amity Point rig?) and whether the Yawl rig on the 18 could be adapted for the 15.
Out of curiosity I also asked if the Amity Point 20 could be tweaked to perform like the Green Island designs (my understanding is that it doesn't go to windward so well in its current form, though both hulls look similar bar the transom and bear a striking resemblance to a smaller Egret). I will let you know what he says.

Al I have some pics of my almost finished GI 18, very similar to the GI 15. I will email them to you.
I will put them on the forum when I work out how to do it.

Chris & Greg,
Thank you in advance for your pics....Greg,best you email them to me direct as I don't think WoodenBoats facility is working yet....last time I enquired,Scot,of WoodenBoat told me the facility was "broken"! & still not fixed.
Love to see your boat Greg, finished or not.
Al.
