Paint and varnish

I plan to varnish my stem and stern posts and the transom and then I would like to varnish the inside of the hull on my Rhodes :rolleyes: Wherry. If I don't like the bright finish I will prime and paint over the varnish and leave the transome and stem and stern posts, and frames bright. Will the paint stick to the varnish as well as it would stick to primed wood?

Key well and your varnish will be your primer ... if you don't like the look of the varnish and you decide to move on.
