I would like an opnion from anyone who knows about this model of boat:

I found a 1957 Mercury Sabre, with a Gray Marine 188 horse motor, and trailer, for $1500.
The topsides of the boat, which are cruiser/riveria style, are bright and in need of refinishing, but they don't look rotted or damaged--it's just that time.

The interior is in very good shape, garage kept or covered its whole life.

The sides appear to be mahogany carvel, with a thick plywood (and glassed) bottom. The carvel planks have shrunk some, and the owner says the boat seeps. It also lives on a trailer. One can see some plastic caulking peeling out here and there in the seams.

Appears to have one damaged/sprung plank, where judging from the dent in the aluminum stem, someone hit a bulwork or dock and fractured the plank. But it is not "working", according to the owner, and it is one plank below sheer, so it is out of the water...

No rot anywhere from exterior or interior.

The motor runs, though it is 50 yrs old--and the propeller shaft and bed appear to be in good shape and the bed is unrotted.

The transon is sound but has divorced itself of any caulking. No rot.

$1500 sound too high? O yeah--the trailer was custom for the boat and has new tires and bearings.

what do ya think?

If you like it and want to put the work into it that to me is all that matters...
