View Full Version : sail plan for Skaneateles No.5 ???
I was reading the latest issue of WB and wondered if anyone had a sail plan for such a boat? I know of a similar design and would love to see some kind of sprit or yawl/sprit combination.
What about it sail designers?

Given the size and stability of such a craft you are into modest old style sailing canoe design. Simplest would be a couple of lugs like Bob Baker did on his Piccolo' they can be bigger, 55 sq ft. Or if you want to go really simple, spring for a 44 sq ft ACA class lateen. But a sail doesn't get you very much on a boat like this that rows so easily.
Never really understood the urge to put a sail on a really nicely optimized row boat.
Ok,
The reason I ask is because I have built a few boats like this and have adapted an "Ellen" rig from Sailrite to the boat. She is a little tender but, very exciting to sail. I used to row quite a bit with her but, now sail almost everyday that I can when at the cottage. Another variation on the rig would be wonderful. I thought maybe a sprit rig with a self-tending jib would suffice. She is long and sometimes has trouble coming around into the wind. I usually round up a little to help. Otherwise, a sail on this boat really does work. She moves fast and when the wind is gone, you can un-step the mast and easily row home. An electric motor on a plate that mounts to the stern is a very welcome edition too.
