Does anyone know where I can find a design to mount a 5hp outboard to the hull of a double ender?
The rudder precludes a stern mounting and the leverage that will be generated by the engine, when in use, seems dangerous and threatening to the gunwhales.
At present I have an inboard outboard well which threatened to swamp my boat last week so I wish to change it.

I can't say about 5hp, but the arrangement on my Caledonia yawl works for 2hp. The bracket I use is rated to 10hp. I'm not sure the boat would hold up to a big motor. Some bad pictures of my set up are in this album, photos 28-32.

Venchka,
Thanks a lot for the info, the views of your beautiful kids and fantastic boat. It is my boats big sister. I keep threatening to put up a lug rig. I'll maybe crib your sail and spar dimensions and get rid of my gunter.
I am going to draw up a modified version of the outboard bracket that you have and make it this winter.
Thanks once again and keep your feet out of the swamp.

Your welcome! They are my daughter's children. Wee grandhoonberrys I learned yesterday from out mate Shane who seems to be in more of a swamp than I. If I can help with dimensions or better photos, give me a shout.

Just how big is your boat, Rex? Maybe we can find a similar sized Oughtred double ender that you could borrow some rig dimensions from.

It's either a well or a removable bracket on the quarter or the rudder.

If you only need it for manoevering around docks and marinas, then a trolling motor might be an option.

My boat is 16ft long. I have gunter rig at the present so I have the short wooden mast, spar and boom, which I can adapt for lug. I also have some sails that I can adapt and resew to lug. Oh and the use of a heavy duty sewing machine. So what I am looking for is the dims. of the sail.
The bracket that Venchka has will be relatively easy to make/adapt for use on the quarter of my boat. The well that I already have on my boat is going to disappear. Last week I was out in a chop and on coming into shore ran into dirty water and had to cut back on the throttle which set the boat bouncing and water spouting up the well, which I didn't like at all. There wasn't any danger really but my ballast/passenger wasn't happy.
With our capricious winds I have decided that any hole in the bottom is bad news.
As for Shane, most of us came out of the swamp millions of years ago. He will just take a little longer.

I have the dims for the lug that fits Joel Whites Shearwater (16' DE, 70 sqft sail) at home, I'll try and bring them in tomorrow; I wouldn't be surprised if "Sailrite" had them too, I seem to recall them offering a kit.

luff= 86" foot= 105" leech= 148" head= 83"
diag=130".
this fits on a 12' mast, 7' spar and 9' boom.

Hope that of use

Thanks Gert et al.
I was browsing and found the leeboard thread and realised how easy it would be to adapt the design to use as an outboard mount.

For my Lug sail change I have decided that I will make a second mast step for'ard of my gunter step and make a new set of spars and mast.
Could be a little crowded if I decide to use both sails at the same time though. tongue.gif
Maybe I could also use the ouboard with the above.
