View Full Version : A fine Rowing/Sailing dinghy: Tammie Norie? Frances?

Hey all. With this boatbuilders show going on and my Shellback project 1/2 way or more done I am brainstorming the next project, another rowing/sailing dinghy but larger (did ya'll know I am 6'6"...pro: can handle a large boat, con: need a large boat). By next winter I hope to have a workshop so assuming that happens I will want to build something ~14' that I can take out during the off season especially, no matter what the conditions, wind or no wind, and have a nice time on the water in a light, classic looking boat that doesn't need to be a performer. I have been thinking about John Brooks' Frances but recently found the Tammie Norie and her looks seized me!
Anyone seen or sailed either boat, Frances or TN? What did you think? What about stretching the TN to 15'? What would one gain? While we are talking rowing/sailing qualities in one boat, what makes a boat, like the TN, a decent rower and sailor at the same time?
Cheers,

Well, I'm no NA, but I'd guess that the aft section pretty much determines how boats of this basic size and design will perform under oar or sail. As for stretching the TN, I'd contact the designer.
It has to be a compromise in the aft section, partway between being optmized for oar (narrow, long skeg for good tracking) and sail (wide, less tracking).
My understanding is that boats with a relatively narrow aft section will tend to "squat" when pressed under sail, reducing speed and in effect lowering hull speed. Boats designed for sail or power have fuller aft sections (more reserve boyancy) allowing more speed and stability with weight or sailing pressure aft.
This topic is of interest to me, as I'm just finishing restoring and converting a pulling boat to sail. I expect her to be tender and have issues that a boat of similar length designed for sail wouldn't have.

Hey Clint, if you haven't finalized the Tammie Norie decision yet Don Maurer's pics might sway you in her direction:
About a quarter of the way down this (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=011158) thread.

Who says I'm an enabler? Next time I'm over we'll take a hard look at the garage expansion. :D

Man, Don's TN is a beaut. This boat is quite a thing...it looks absolutely traditional, you'd never know the laps were glued with epoxy. In my IO catalog, he says the TN can be done up to 15' as an option. I like the possibility of good carrying capacity in this boat so my family could all go out together. So many boats to build...just can't build 'em all at once.
Cheers,
Clint
