Does anyone out there have/had a Alden design, Malabar Jr. the 30 LOA design. I am wondering what the headroom is below ?

Okay, the headroom is pretty scant - but that wasn't unusual in her day.
Under the sliding hatch it's 5 ft 8 inches.
Under the deckbeams, mid cabin it's 5 ft 2-3 inches. An extra 1.75 inches between the beams.
Under the forehatch it's just 5 ft.
The freeboard amidships is about 2 ft or so, but the thing that really kills headroom is that the floors are 8 inches deep throughout. As designed, the Jr. is a pretty robust vessel. Awful pretty though. ;)

Thanks Norm,
I have noticed in searching that he JR was built to several different waterline lengths all around 30 feet plus or minus a foot or so. Sure would like to get aboard one of these to get a feel for the space. Thanks again Norm.

Don't know if this helps or not, but here are some photos of "Endless", a Malabar Jr owned by a friend of mine. She was built sometime around 1936 and is originally from Maine.

You might want to talk to Tom Garber, who has posted here from time to time. He did a complete restoration on a Malabar Jr and documented it in this video:

I have the video and it is very well done. He is in New York and has been very helpful in answering my questions in the past.

HR, Thanks for the pics they are very good. Does your friend that owns this Malabar do any off shore ssiling with her ?
Eric
No, he just sails among the islands of Mahone Bay here in Nova Scotia, mainly daysailing and some weekending. From my experience sailing on her, she handles the wind quite nicely but I have never been in any real seas in her.

EricNo I don't. But I did fall in love with this design a couple of years ago. If I were building that size, she'd be on the top of my list.
When researching this plan, I found numerous versions of this boat's plans; covering several lengths and sail plans. Contact Alden for all the plan versions they support. They were also very helpful.
