Can anyone comment on the sailing characteristics of the Arch Davis Penobscot 14? It's a beautiful little boat, but I wonder how it handles rough water. I don't plan any huge voyages, but I need something that will get me back to shore safely when the wind picks up (as it often does) on the west coast of Lake Michigan.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill:
I built a Penobscot 14 a couple of years ago. She sails wonderfully, however you should consider that she was also designed for rowing, so her freeboard is low, in order for her rowing properties not to be compromised. I have sailed her on Lake Erie in a pretty good wind, but with a worried expression on my face. I have also capsized her doing a poorly executed jibe. She is very easy to right, and there is positive floatation designed in the bow and stern, so I bailing her out, and going again is no problem.
I have never felt unsafe in any condition where other boats her size, and bigger are on the water. I choose the lug sail option and have been happy with the performance and simplicity, but I had to work out several kinks out of the rig before I felt totally safe. Let me know if you need any other information.

Mower: Do you have further information regarding her rowing qualities? How does she handle? How much weather can she take when being rowed? How much freeboard does she have? I'm in the lakes area too and was curious. Thanks.
