View Full Version : Tugboat plans
Hi Folks,
This is my first time posting here. I enjoy reading all the info you fine people are writing. My question is does anyone know of any plans for a mini tug? Maybe 14 to 16 feet. I would like power it with a outboard.
Thanks,
Huey

Hi Huey, and welcome aboard. There are several possibilities out there. The best known small tug plans are from Berkeley Engineering: they have tugs in four sizes, including a 14-footer known as the "Candu-EZ."
There's loads of info about the Berkeley tugs (and a few others) at the "mini-tugboat" home page:

Check out the book by Benford on tabloid yachts. He has a design for a tug that I believe is 14'. I've always been interested in building it. It's the saltiest looking little tug that you will find in this size.

Another option is Phil Bolger's MICROTRAWLER. You'll find some nice photos of a somewhat modified boat here:
www.duckworksmagazine.com/articles/makeover/ (http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/articles/makeover/)
Microtrawler is 14-6 long and 8 feet wide, with a pair of full sized berths and a standing room wheelhouse. The modified boat above has a larger cockpit and no berths.
The boat's hull is unusual in that she has a flat bottom with a box-like "keel" underneath. The combination is said to produce very little wake, with good performance at planing speeds.

Glen-L designs has a few in different sizes, and Sam Devlin has a nice one. Benford's are the nicest looking, though.

Sam Devlin has a couple tug types, his new one Godzilla is awesome, but its probably more than your lookin for. He has aa outboard design thats sorta looks like a little tug called Dipper, maybe thats more to your liking.

You folks are the greatest. I know I would get some good answers.
Of course you know that I will be bothering all of you asking for advice on how to build the darn thing once I decide on a plane. My wife just told me I might want to think about a 20 foot design. ( she needs alot of space for her junk)

it might be alright at 20 feet...I'm working on a 29 foot version.......the extra 6 feet would allow a proper head forward for the ladies and an extra 3-4 feet aft will allow some other amenities. A 20-22 foot version with a 9.5-10 foot beam would work out nicely for a mini yacht for snowbirding the intercoastal to Florida and back.......
