Does anyone know where I can get a set of building plans for a Faroe Islands rowing boat known as a tribekkur (three-bencher)? I've tried contacting rowing clubs in the Faroes, but so far without much luck.

There's a whole fleet of faeroese boats at the Roskilde Vikingeskibsmuseet in Denmark. There was also one at the Center for Woodenboats in Seattle.

Here's a list of the Roskilde Museums boat collection (http://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/page.asp?sideid=218&zcs=458)

There's an address and telephone# on this web page as well as video footage of the construction of the Glendalough ship.

I'd be interested to hear more about your faeroese boat, the seksaering from Eidi might be just the one you're looking for.

Good Luck,Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I've been in email contact with Søren Nielsen, who is the head of the Boat Yard of The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. Their website shows a Faroese tribekkur which the Boat Yard has built, but they don't sell plans. He was able to give me one lead to follow, but so far it has not produced any results.

For anyone interested, there are some pictures of the Viking Boat Museum's trybekkur at:

I asked my brother Arne, who is specialised in Faroese culture. His Answer:

-------------

A tríbekkur (speak [truibekkur], and note the í in spelling :) is the smallest of the Faroe boats. It has it's name from the three benches, is about 18 feet long and is rowed by two - as you know.

Literature is to be found here:

http://www.flb.fo/sidur/leita/bokalistar/foboat.HTM (Bibliography of the National Library of the Faroes)

The standard book (in Faroese) is:

Andras Mortensen: ''Hin føroyski róðrarbáturin. Sjómentir føroyinga í eldri tíð.'' Annales Societatis Scientiarum Færoensis, Supplementum XXVI.
Tórshavn, 2000. ISBN 99918-41-26-1
http://www.dpc.dk/naf/dokumenter/1200/3-Andras1.htm (English summary. This was a dissertation at the University of the Faroes - www.setur.fo (http://www.setur.fo) )

However, there are two main boat musesums in the Faroes:

1. www.natmus.fo (http://www.natmus.fo) (National Museum with a big collection of boats) 2. Bátasavnið ("boat museum"), FO 520 Leirvík, Tel. +298 - 31 31 78, Mobile
+298 - 21 31 78, Fax +298 - 44 33 49

Rowing clubs with websites are

http://www.drekin.fo Tórshavn
http://www.krf.fo Klaksvík
http://www.neystid.dk in Denmark

I hope, one of these resources can help :)

But why a tiny tríbekkur? The áttamannafar (24 feet) is the finest boat ever, seagoing and elegant. :)

Ofcourse a seksæringur like the "Naddoddur" remains the state of the art:
www.naddoddur.com (http://www.naddoddur.com) Note the English page there:
www.naddoddur.com/Sub/felagi.htm (http://www.naddoddur.com/Sub/felagi.htm)

Kind Regards
Arne
