View Full Version : Tom Tucker's "Lyra"
Having just about finished an inch and a half to the foot model of Tom Tucker's "Lyra", I am interested to hear if anyone out there has built the real McCoy. I would be especially interested to hear if anyone has managed to stretch this boat by 6 or 8 foot or so and if so, how she turned out.
Looking forward to your posts.

I don't know this design - can you post a picture, or a link?
Thanks
Tony

is the link to a photo journal of the model I made. A search on WoodenBoat.com turned up only references to their article in issue 31(p.97) I can't find any other links out there and the only other reference I've ever seen to it was in a recent WB on the launchings pages...

Wow Crip, beautiful model! I'm impressed. You've pretty much built Lyra, you just need to repeat the exercise using full-size lumber. If the real one looks as good as the model you'll blow us all away!
What sort of rig does she carry?
Cheers
Tony Hunt
Why, thank you kindly. She's been a pleasure to build.
She is a gaff rigged sloop and my buddy Chris (who aspires to be a rigger) is just about finished with her. She looks mighty fine and I'll put the link here once the finished pics are up on my site.
We (Chris & I) would love to have a go at building her fullsize. She seems to be within our grasp in as far as finances and ability go but the killer out here in Japan is finding a place to do it. Last boat I built here
http://homepage.mac.com/crip/McGregor.html
occupied my living room for 3 months and really wasn't conductive to good neighborly relations as I lived in an apartment at the time. Lyra is over 20' with her bowsprit and getting a space to build something that size would cost more than building her...
Oops, double posting. sorry.

Crip,
Here's a web site you might be interested in. There is a photo of a 30 foot Emily that was finished in 1999 by someone in Japan. Here's the site: georgebuehler.com
My son just married a woman from Japan --he taught conversational English in the small town, Sarenishi for two years.

Hi Steve.
Congratulations to your son and I wish him and his new wife all the best.
Thanks for the link. I've run across Mr. Buehler's name several times but this is the first time for me to see Emily. Seems very interesting but Oh, for some better pictures.
Does anyone know who or where in Japan she was built?
