My brother is building a boat, a twenty three ft. outboard powered bank dory. He wants to know the angle from vertical to place his transom/bulkhead. A bulkhead with a well. He also specifically asked what the industry standard is.

It's a ten horse, four stroke, large prop, geared down doggy.

Someone here must know.

If he builds his engine mount panel at between 12 to 16 degrees, he'll be fine.

I agree with mmd. The transom angle on my Mako is 12deg.

That's what Gerr's Nature of Boats says, too: 14+-2 degrees.

Thanks gents. He lurks here occasionally, and used to post the same, but he's got a new service and hasn't sorted out his log in stuff. I'll tell him, or he'll see this.

BTW it's an airex, glass and epoxy dory from his own pen, and he's very happy to have all the hull laminations DONE, and to be thinking about bulkheads and finish work. It's gonna be nice! He's gonna glue down some hundred(500?) pounds of lead in the bottom and fill the ends with foam. He's building it hell for stout, but light, so it should be a pretty able little booger. We were thinking eight degrees for the engine mount, but it sounds like a little more. Thanks.

As much as people wring their hands over it, this is still a good place. smile.gif
