I just called as I'd noticed he wasn't about for a couple of weeks. I talked to his wife, Nancy.

Darryl has been a wonderful sounding board for me on a number of non-boat issues, and did a fine job mediating some of the ugliness that came after 11 Sept. I'm sorry to tell you that we'll have to get along better on our own, now...

What sad news! I have been thinking of him a lot these last few days, I was wondering how he was getting on with his fight, and I was wondering if I or one of us might drop in for a chat when next in CA.

He's a bright light and the forum's a bit dimmer for his absence. Damn, I wanted to email him news of my hopefully upcoming launch.

Thank you, Ed, for telling us, and thanks for being a good friend to him.

Ed, sorry as I am to hear the news, I would be sorrier had Darryl's passing transpired without our knowledge.

Please convey my condolences and high regards to Nancy.

My great uncle Jack used to drink three toasts on such occasions: one to God, one to the deceased, and one to the sea (sipped, and then thrown into the wake astern). It was solemn, and seemed to help.

Perhaps the family will have some such ceremony on "Gatsby," a vessel who meant so much to Darryl.

Godspeed,

Alan

Ed, Thanks for the news. I was also thinking of Darryl the other day. It had been a while since he last posted and given the state of his health, the long absence wasn't a good sign.

Although I disagreed with him occasionally, he was always a gentleman in his discussions on this forum, respectful in disagreement and he never got carried away in the heat of argument. He was one forum member who I would have liked to have visited if I were in his area and I know he would have been a gracious host. His family has lost one decent fellow. My condolences to them.

"I have grown so close to so many on this forum.My goodness we differ so much on so many things,yet we seem so fundamentally honorable and respectful of our role as citizens.That matters to me enormously.

We are in some danger of dimming that beacon.We are a kind nation,but have lost our patriotic awareness.I believe we will all,or nearly all,protect that beacon by rising up and making sure it stays bright.

Thank you for writing. Remembering a distant post,YES we do have much in common."

My best to you and yours,Darryl

Into the Cloud

My course home is south southeast a quarter south
And the moon rises east southeast, rising over my shoulder
As I row. And my beautiful straight wake
Neither catches nor intersects the moon's path.
These paths don't last. The moon's path moves with me
Constant in a relative way 'till I see the declination shifitng
As she rises, as I row. And Leeward's wake is dappled out astern
Until the zepher dissipates that feint track.

We weep for paths that appear to us too short.
A moon path occluded by fog and not reaching the horizon
Is a promise not quite kept, a route to nowhere,
Or perhaps that moon path is the only route home,
Into a cloud that holds no wake or trace
and into which we all will someday sail.

I didn't know him as well as many of you, but I liked him nonetheless. He always seemed the genuine type, and always had a kind word. Ed, can you please forward Jenny and my sincerest condolences along with the rest?

For the first time in acoupla weeks, I'm going to have to go home on time tonight and give the wife and kids their due hugs and kisses and attention.

Goodbye, Darryl. I'll say a prayer for your family.

I've been wondering about Darryl, and hoping he was just having computer trouble. My friends, we've lost one of our most decent and considerate members.

Ed mentioned how Darryl helped everyone get along last September. He gently nudged me back into line a couple of times, reminding me to look at all of a fellow forumite's posts before condemning the one I found offensive.

I'll miss his capering smileys.

The Lost Master

"And when I come to die." he said,
"Ye shall not lay me out in state,
Nor leave your laurels at my head,
Nor cause your men of speech orate;
No monument your gift shall be,
No column in the Hall of Fame;
But just this line ye grave for me:
'He played the game.'"

So when his glorious task was done,
It was not of his fame we thought;
It was not of his battles won,
But of the pride with which he fought;
But of his zest, his ringing laugh,
His trenchant scorn of praise or blame:
And so we graved his epitaph,
"He played the game."

And so we, too, in humbler ways
Went forth to fight the fight anew,
And heeding neither blame nor praise,
We held the course he set us true.
And we, too, find the fighting sweet;
And we, too, fight for fighting's sake;
And though we go down in defeat,
And though our stormy hearts may break,
We will not do our Master shame:
We'll play the game, please God,
We'll play the game.

I am much to sad to sit here like I have done so many nights before. I am returing to the shop, to make some sawdust on his behalf. I am finding some piece of mind in wading throught the sawdust, letting it waft drift upon me and remembering a man and his wooden boat(s).

I find that returning to what this forum is about (wooden things, and such) uplifting. Though the departure of a friend (as said before), sobering.

Ah me, this is sad news indeed, to hear that Das has slipped the hawser and is off to Fiddler's Green. Das, we'll miss you! You were truly one of the gang here, and loved. I hope our contributions enlived your life as much as yours did ours. The next time I raise a glass, it'll be to you.

Sonnet 30
When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:
Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow,
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,
And weep afresh love's long since cancell'd woe,
And moan the expense of many a vanish'd sight:
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restor'd and sorrows end.

Now forumites, what can we do? If I had the address I'd send a card. If there is the chance of sending flowers should we not take it? If instead the wish of Das and his family is to contribute to a worthy cause he has designated, shall we not do so? Together, as a group? It worked well for the Smiths' hats. Let's talk about this. One of our own has fallen, and though we can't be present when his friends and family wish him farewell, we perhaps can make our presence felt?

I did some searching of the back posts, re-reading some of Das' notes. This one stuck with me....

"Oh my,the winter no matter how mild, has been much too long." --dasboat, 2002

I'm sure that it's eternal Spring where Das is. Think of all the fine messin' about in boats he's getting to do!

Dear Friends, I just got home from my 12 hours as an oncology nurse. In the years that I have been doing this, I've wondered at times what keeps me working with cancer patients. Das was and is typical of many who I have met. I enjoyed his thoughts posted on these pages. As with many oncology patients, I learned much from him. So, with him in mind, keep your focus on what is important... family, friends, love. Oncology nurses have a saying,"never delay a pleasure", so I raise my glass to Das, may the four winds blow you home again. Keep smiling, Mike.

Oh dear.

This is the trouble with time zones, I missed all this until I came in this morning.

I never met Darryl, but I found myself in tears at my desk somehow. For me, he was one of the "old gang" (you know who you are). We had some fun with "Lulu" and those hats. And he so often posted a brilliantly witty reply.

I never met him, but I felt I knew him. And I realised he was unwell, of course.

What a pleasure to know you and to share in your wonderfully told stories. Like Garland, I too was taken to a nostalgic place of snuggling with our daughters and reading bedtime stories.

Thanks, DarrylGoing to miss you, Dasboat.

Ed... Please do let us know what an appropriate gesture for the family would be. I originally thought to ask you for an address to express my condolances personally, but perhaps this is just too public a place for such things. A worldwide "deluge" of sympathy, no matter how well intentioned, may just be overwhelming for a family suffering what is, after all, a private loss. Do you mind being our "go between"?

There’s a graveyard for every wooden boat that ever graced a waterfront. The watchman is a master restorer with infinite patience and skill always looking for his next project.

Last week I visited the Herreshoff museum and saw the decrepit bones of a hundred year-old sailing yacht in the shop, propped up and held to shape with little more than spit and glue. No deck, half a transom, rotten frames, corroded fasteners. But someone at the museum saw a suggestion of past glory and had the notion that there would be value to the living if these old bones could be brought back to life.

Building a boat is like giving birth. Restoring a boat is like resurrecting the dead. I like the restorations best. I can pretend that we are not powerless in the face of death.

When the master restorer comes upon Darryl’s old frame, I know that he’ll see the former glory and find a project worthy of restoration.

Condolences to his family and to all of us, his friends.

OK, I've talked to Nancy - She'd (and she says Darryl, too) would appreciate a donation to:

Lymphoma Research Foundation

I think it would be nice if there was just one donation from the WBF community, but I don't really know how to make that happen. I can't see WoodenBoat playing banker, but then stranger things have happened. Scot?

The death of a loved one is like a stone, fresh-cleaved from a larger rock. At first it is sharp, angular, and at best unpleasant to hold, if not painful.

Over time, however, the sharp edges begin to abrade, and eventually the stone becomes so gently rounded, we pick it up, gaze upon it, hold and roll it in our hand, and derive comfort and pleasure from it.

The way we did it with the collection to get real sou'westers for JohnRSmith and his missus was that one of us volunteered to play banker. Of course there were only a handful of folks in on that gig and here there would be many more, judging from the posts.

But I still think we can go this route. Let's take up a collection and make a donation in Das Boat's name (his real one, I guess smile.gif ). Yeah, we could get all legal-eagle about it with escrow accounts etc but do we really need to? If we are the community I think we are, we do not. We should be able to trust each other. I hesitate to nominate anyone specific because this gang is full of good people: Bob Cleek, DonnWest, Ed Harrow, Scot Rosen, Barbara Burnside, Skiffs, and many many more would do a fine job I'm sure. All I ask is that no one suggest I do it. I've got a bit much on my plate right now.

You fellas decide, we will follow your que no worries... Id suggest something, but well... your there and were down here and its a flamin long way, so you organize something and we will help where we can.

From my perspective, if his wife can know that theres this whole packet of like minded folks all around the world who care then that will help in some small way to know how respected he was by his fellow shipmates... thats were Ed would come in I suppose... thanks for the information mate.

Been travelling so I just got the sad news.

If Scott Rosen has not already started being treasurer, I will volunteer to do it.

For the Hat Project, as John said there were only about a dozen folks involved, and this looks like it will involve many more. For that reason we should have a way to keep the records wide open. How about if people emailed the treasurer and an auditor at the same time, telling both people how much they were sending. The two totals should match. Treasurer could keep a receipt book with a total figure as well.

And if anyone were uncomfortable about sending money via someone else, there is always the option to make a direct contribution to the foundation.

I nominate Ed for Auditor.

What think you, everybody?

I've heard from Scot, and WoodenBoat can handle this, and actually make it pretty simple for those who would like go that way.

He didn't post anything as he says, "Looks like folks have been working out something so forumites are taking care of it all."

On the other hand:

"Yes, our business dept says it would be fine. Granted, there are some tax things, but, as they pointed out, lordy help the agent that wanted to come down on us for doing a simple, helpful thing.

I was going to post a note on the forum, offering
WoodenBoat as the central collection site. But, as other folks have also been named as possibilities, I certainly don't want to "take over" without folks liking the idea.

Here's the gist of what I was going to post:

Ed contacted me about his note, wondering if we would be the central collection place for donations to the Lymphoma Research Center. It's a terrific idea, and we of course would be honored. However, if folks felt some other method was more appropriate, that would of be fine.

If WoodenBoat handles this, we could make it pretty simple for you donate. You'd click a link, and make your donation through our secure store site. Basically, you'd select an amount, and post your donation, using a credit card. You could also mail a check in to us, with a special donation address. We would "process" and send
you a copy of your donation record, and then we'd write one check to the Lymphona Research Center. We'll cover the credit card fees/adminstration costs.

I'd suggest we have a cut-off time frame for this, and after that date post a link directly to the Lymphoma site, or at least provide their address.

Do let me know if you would like WoodenBoat to handle this, and any suggestions you might have about it. "

Sounds really nice to me. What do you think?

I think either the homegrown method or using Woodenboat's resources would work. Woodenboat can make it pretty easy to use a credit card online while if we do it ourselves it will involve everyone mailing a check to the "banker". But perhaps the grassroots approach has some other benefits....such as strengthening our bonds of community more than they would be if we took WB up on their kind offer? Or maybe not. Does anyone else have thoughts on this? Which way should we go? I'm partial to homegrown but if most want to go with WB that's fine too. Whichever way we choose, I suggest that we arrange to also have sent to Darryl's family an appropriate card listing the names and hometowns of all the contributors (unless they would prefer to remain anonymous). That way, his family can see that das had friends all around the world and this may ease their grief a little.

We won't let you down. We should have it all set within a couple of hours. We'll post a linking page from the forum, which has all the options.

We will provide direct links to our secure on-line store, toll-free telephone, and snail mail, and fax options. All options other than snail mail will require Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Personal checks and credit cards are welcome by snail mail.

We have a slight limitation with our on-line side of things, in that our system won't handle an "open" amount. We will post links for $10, $15, $25, and $100 amounts. If you wanted to donate $30, then you would just change the quantity to 2 on the $15 item (okay, or 3 on the tenner). Let me know if other amounts ought to be there.

We will snail mail to you a copy of your donation, so you have something besides your credit card statement.

If we set a deadline of a month, and after that, we change the link to the Lymphoma Research Center, then we will have a target date for the final tally / announcement.

Let me know what I'm missing.

Best,
Scot

One thing we can do for the grassroots thing is to annotate a world map with all the names and home locations of the people who have posted on this thread. I'm happy to take that on when I get home. Sea Fever
By John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again
to the lonely sea and sky
And all I ask is a tall ship
and a star to steer her by
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song
and the white sail's shaking
And a gray mist on the sea's face,
and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again
for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call
That may not be denied
And all I ask is a windy day
with the white clouds flying
And the flung spray and the blown spume
and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again
to the vagrant gypsy life
To the gull's way and the whale's way
where the wind's like a whetted knife
And all I ask is a merry yarn
from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream
when the long trick's over.

My grandfather died of cancer, a grandmother was a breast cancer survivor and three years ago my mother survived cancer.
In Sept 2000 my mother in law was diagnosed w/ Lymphoma but given an 80% chance of cure. Well after surgery and 6 rounds of chemo she was indeed pronounced cured in APR 2001. So we thought.
Then in August 2001 my father in law was diagn. w/ adenocarcinoma metastisized to the liver; prognosis less than six months. Would that we be so lucky. He died 5 weeks later. Then 3 weeks after we buried him my mother in laws cancer was back. Chemo has not done anything and we are waiting to hear what to do next. Cancer truly is an insidious thing.
I did not "know" Darryl well, but always enjoyed his posts. I also am very touched by the response from everyone here on the forum including the WB folks. So yes I will be opening my wallet and putting my $$ where my heart/mouth are. SWMBO doesn't quite "get it" when I talk about things on the forum; this she "gets". God Bless...

Thanks, Kermit. Some WWII Navy and Marine Corps guys I know have a strong emotional reaction to it. It affects me that way too. Here's the whole thing (correct any mistakes, this is from my memory: somewhat of a sieve at this point)

Eternal Father strong to save
Whose Arm hath bound the restless wave;
Who bidst the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

Oh Jesus who the waters heard
And hushed their raging at thy word;
Who walked upon the foaming deep
And calm amid the storm didst sleep;
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

Oh Holy Spirit Who didst brood
Upon the waters dark and rude;
And bid their angry tumult cease
And give for wild confusion, peace;
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

Oh Trinity of love and power
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Great memory, Alan. The only difference I see is that I learned "O Christ" rather than "O Jesus"; this is a change that frequently happens between denominations. There may be other minor changes from the "official" text; I've seen bar brawls about these, and think the brawlers miss the point.

If you think there are other verses, too, you're right, there are a bunch of them listed at http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq53-1.htm

The verse for boatbuilders seems especially appropriate.

Alan D. Hyde
03-12-2002, 03:19 PM
Good link, htom. Thanks.

The changes with which I am familiar are those made in recent years by the ever-PC Methodist Church, as they attempt to eliminate baleful terms like "Father" and "brethern." Of course, they continue to credit the hymn to Whiting, and shamefully provide no notes concerning their changes. Such censorship is, in my view, the literary equivalent of assassination.

Imagine these same church bureaucrats altering the works of Rembrandt, or chiseling at the Venus de Milo to suit the changing fashions which move their tiny and superficial minds like a light breeze moves the surface of the sea. But enough griping; this hymn makes, as originally written, a moving tribute to Darryl. God rest you and yours, Das.

Pretty good memory there. Very powerful piece. I wish I had a way to post the sound.

"Eternal Father," also known as "The Navy Hymn," was written in 1860 by The Reverend William Whiting, a clergyman of the Church of England. He wrote it after he came through a terrible storm on the Mediterranean.

Here on Whidbey we have Naval Air Station Whidbey, so we have a verse for the fliers. Not sure where we got it. We've been called on to sing it at a couple of memorials on the base. Tough old master chiefs get pretty tearry.

Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
Through all great spaces of the sky,
Be with them traversing the air
In dark'ning storms and sunlight fair.
Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer
For those in peril in the air.

Sadness. I've been away a while. This is sad news indeed. I just spent some time reviewing several of Darryl's posts. He has added much to this community. He was certainly a gentleman and seemed to carefully weigh heavy matters.

My heart-felt condolences to Nancy, the rest of his family, and his close friends. I am so sorry. I hope the God of all comfort will be with you and help you through your grief. No doubt you will miss him much. We will as well.

I don't know if it's been done- but Scott can WB print up a bunch of Darryl's post's for the family? It would be nice for the family to have a record of Darryl's comments, wisdom, and ramblings. Words are very important. I know that as time passes it is helpful to remember a friend's and partner's comments and perspective.

I came back to the forum yesterday after a bit of an absence, only to hear the sad news. I struggled for something fitting to say, but am at a loss, so I'll keep it simple:

He was a true gentleman who will be greatly missed. My condolences to the family and to all here who are hurting due to his passing.

Concerning the collection of his postings, I had the same thought this morning. I suggest that it not be a collection of the entire posts, but his words alone. Obviously this eliminates some that would be difficult to understand out of context, but I would bet there are a lot of pearls of wisdom and wit that could be lifted unencumbered from the threads. Some that may need some setup could be put in a format like: (Concerning such and such subject)..."text of quote from Darryl".

I'm finding myself in a introspective mood, looking for certain "Words of Consolation". That lead me here... We're counting down towards 8 April.

Just out of curiosity, what's the total collections so far?

Not sure what the total is, but let's keep this at the top to help inspire donations (Donn's words mostly). Let's make this a memorable donation!! smile.gif Sail on Das!

Any amount here is a success, IMHO. I'm still amazed at the generosity of WoodenBoat and also your work, Scott. Any other magazine in the country might not even touch something like this, save the exception of one chartered for 'hope', and we know where that comes from. smile.gif

Giving in memory of someone I've conversed with only by pen or keyboard might seem strange to some, but in this case and for this purpose I was glad to be here. I figure maybe it might be my buck that saves my kid's life one day. Better here than spent on cigarettes.

Be proud of yourselves, folks. I believe Das would be.

All right gang - there's no reason we can't top $2000.

Everyone back to the WB Bar for another round!

I agree. 53 donors at ave of $25 = $1300. Near as I can tell that leaves 4,815! of us to go. If you all contributed $1 we'd end up at over $6,000. (Do I sound like your local NPR station?)
(No, StanV, Alan, Allen, etc, you don't really need to chime in on that, LOL)

One last mention from Brooklin... we put the check in the mail today. Quite nice to lick the envelope closed. And, while I bet the Lymphoma Research Center gets checks from all over, I can imagine there will be more than one smile in that office when they think about a bunch of wooden boat heads chipping in the name of their electronic friend.
