View Full Version : Acorn Molds
I'm ready to set my molds for an 8' Acorn skiff. By shortening the stations a bit, I see I can get planking out of an 8' sheet of plywood. So other than being able to practice your scarphing is there any advantage to lengthening the boat out to 7'10? I built Gifford Jacksons "Marisol" several years ago.

Suppose it depends on what you want it for, if you will be happy with the "stumpy" version go for it, however the bigger the better is my view, the larger acorns look nicer?

All things being equal, don't longer boats row easier?

I'm bulding mine to the full 8' (or so) and I managed to get by without scarphing by cutting the longer planks from the sheet at an angle. Most of the planks can actually be obtained from the sheet without having to resort to piecing things together; it's just the last two (four total) that required angled cutting.
